Kinhtedothi - Through 3 seasons of organization and 2024 being the first year to upgrade the contest to a Media Program, "Silent Contributions" has affirmed its brand, becoming a prestigious playground for journalists and non-professional writers on the topic of social security.

More than just a writing contest…

The upgrading of the contest to a Media Program has demonstrated the effectiveness and the right goals of the 3-party cooperation program for the period 2023 - 2027. Over 4 seasons, the Organizing Committee has received more than 1,600 articles from professional and non-professional authors representing regions across the country to participate in the contest; there are 30 digital press products focusing on popularizing legal knowledge on the Law & Society page (under the Economic & Urban Newspaper). In particular, the program has contributed to diversifying the types of participating press, from visual press, written press, spoken press, increasing the number of articles in the genre of technology media such as: Podcast, emagazine... gradually implementing the source of data journalism on social security issues.

The Organizing Committee has also organized more than 10 media events over the years, from thematic seminars, field surveys at craft villages and workers' residences in industrial parks, organizing on-site legal advice for ethnic minorities, legal advice in the form of podcasts, opening a podcast production competition on the topic of social security for journalism students...

In 2024 alone, in more than 8 months of implementation, the Organizing Committee carried out 6 communication activities, organized 2 competitions including: the Silent Contributions competition for professional and amateur authors; a playground to vote for excellent podcast works on the topic of social security for students of the Academy of Journalism and Communication.

The Organizing Committee also organized 2 field trips to craft villages, industrial facilities, remote areas for journalists to learn about social security issues and environmental impacts of craft villages. Along with that, 8 specialized seminars were organized on each topic such as: Living Wage - Multidimensional Perspective, Ensuring Safe Housing for Workers, Working Rights of People with Disabilities: From Policy to Life... Showing the impressive effectiveness of a Communication Program.

Today (December 3), the Closing Ceremony of the 2024 "Silent Contributions" communication program organized by Kinh te & Do thi Newspaper in collaboration with ActionAid International in Vietnam (ActionAid Vietnam), Vietnam Social Security Program and Project Support Fund (AFV) took place at Hall C of the Academy of Journalism and Communication.

Attracting many non-professional authors

One of the new contents in 2024 is that for the first time, the Organizing Committee has separated the two award systems for professional and non-professional authors. This year, the Organizing Committee has received enthusiastic participation from students from the Academy of Journalism and Communication, especially the Institute of Journalism and Communication (under the Academy of Journalism and Communication) has organized training, fostering and launching classes for students to participate in the contest. Of the 651 entries from professional and non-professional authors, the Organizing Committee received 137 non-professional works. The articles by non-professional authors are posted on various platforms such as tiktok, facebook, youtube and forums. In particular, this year's non-professional authors are many young writers from universities such as: University of Culture, Diplomatic Academy, Academy of Journalism and Communication...

Associate Professor, Dr. Do Thi Thu Hang - Head of the Professional Department of the Vietnam Journalists Association assessed that with a rather narrow topic of high expertise, focusing on the issue of employment and social security for workers, the contest is one of the difficult awards to have in-depth and quality journalistic works. But I am very happy that this year there were 514 professional entries. The quality of the articles was carefully invested, the authors focused on disadvantaged groups, female workers. The portraits show that women have made great efforts to overcome themselves, to exercise their labor rights... The bright spot is that there are in-depth analytical articles that criticize policies. "I hope that there will be more critical journalistic works and sharper, multi-dimensional solutions, through which there are suggestions to adjust policies to bring greater benefits to workers, especially disadvantaged workers" - Associate Professor, Dr. Do Thi Thu Hang said.

For the competition for non-professional authors, the jury also selected 12 works that entered the final round to award prizes to 7 authors/groups of authors (1 First Prize, 1 Second Prize, 3 Third Prizes, 5 Encouragement Prizes). In addition, the Organizing Committee awarded a secondary prize to 1 group that actively participated in the competition and 5 prizes for works that entered the final round. The total prize value of the "Silent Contributions" competition in 2024 is up to 225 million VND, an increase of 6 prizes and 30 million VND in prize money compared to 2023.

Aim for long term goals

To continue the success of the Program, to create a prestigious but also very specific and specialized playground for social security issues of workers, the Organizing Committee plans to develop the Project to Improve the effectiveness of the Communication Program "Silent Contributions" for the period 2025-2027.

According to Editor-in-Chief of Economic & Urban Newspaper Nguyen Thanh Loi, upgrading the Contest to a Media Program has shown the appeal of “Silent Contributions”. “If the project is approved, we plan to coordinate with relevant agencies to organize a Journalism Award, which is expected to have a wide spread and impact on the community. In addition, we will send reporters to the grassroots to organize seminars to disseminate policies to disadvantaged people, especially disabled workers, on how to help them rise up and make positive contributions to society. In addition, we will coordinate with journalism and communication training institutions to organize opportunities for students to participate in creating journalistic works…” – Mr. Nguyen Thanh Loi said, affirming that the team of Economic & Urban journalists is capable enough to successfully develop this project in the coming period.

The project also aims to promote typical and outstanding examples with outstanding achievements in the field of social security, taking care of the disadvantaged; those who have a good heart, joining hands to care for, support and help people with revolutionary contributions, the poor, the elderly, the disabled, children, people in difficult circumstances... "Through organizing media events and competitions to create a spread to the whole society to replicate typical models; create positive effects, contribute to building, preserving and improving social ethics. From there, the Organizing Committee hopes to build and develop a network of journalists and university students participating in activities and events on social security work in provinces and cities across the country" - Editor-in-Chief Nguyen Thanh Loi emphasized.

After 2 preliminary and final rounds, the Jury of the 2024 "Silent Contributions" contest has selected 22 quality works that meet the requirements of the contest for the final round to award prizes to 12 authors/groups of authors (1 First Prize, 1 Second Prize, 3 Third Prizes, 10 Encouragement Prizes). In addition, the Organizing Committee awarded additional prizes to 1 group actively participating in the contest and 10 prizes for works that made it to the final round.
