Vietnam Taekwondo strives with rigorous format to win Olympic ticket

(Dan Tri) - After a Tet holiday away from home, the Vietnamese Taekwondo team is still working hard to prepare for the Olympics, especially in the context of the extremely harsh format for winning tickets to Paris.
On February 26, at the National Sports Training Center in Hanoi, the Taekwondo team, after returning from a training trip in Korea and a competition in the US, continued to practice in preparation for the 2024 Olympics taking place in Paris.
On the first day of Tet, martial artist Bac Thi Khiem won the silver medal in the women's 67kg weight class at the Taekwondo tournament in Canada.
After the tournament in Canada, the team continued to participate in the US Open. Here, martial artist Truong Thi Kim Tuyen also won the silver medal. The last two tournaments are also considered the perfect stepping stone for Vietnamese Taekwondo to enter the Olympic qualifiers in March in China.
In particular, Taekwondo does not have a scoring system to earn a place in the Olympics like other sports, but will take the top two athletes in each event. Each country will have a maximum of four places in the Olympics, including two male athletes and two female athletes. Sharing about the Olympic ticket format, Kim Tuyen said: "I have gradually become familiar with this format. Currently in the Asian region, my weight class has many strong opponents and all are preparing for the upcoming Asian qualifiers. My personal goal is definitely to strive to use all my abilities to win a ticket to the Paris Olympics." Boxer Bac Thi Khiem also said: "Currently, I am trying to improve my technique and physical strength to prepare for the upcoming Olympic qualifiers. This year is also my year of birth, so I will try my best." During the afternoon practice session on February 26, Mr. Vu Xuan Thanh (Deputy Head of High Performance Sports Department 1, Department of Physical Education and Sports) came to wish the team a happy new year, give lucky money and assign tasks to them. The Vietnam Taekwondo team will continue to train at the National Sports Training Center in Hanoi until March, when the entire team will travel to China to participate in the Asian Championship. This tournament will directly determine the Olympic ticket of the Vietnam Sports Delegation.
