The North Ca Mau sweetening area has 5 sub-regions, with a natural area of more than 150,000 hectares, including part of Thoi Binh district, most of Tran Van Thoi district and the entire Minh district, producing according to the sweet ecosystem.
According to the Tran Van Thoi District government, most of the roads are built on dikes, near rivers, canals and streams. Therefore, the situation of river and canal bank erosion has directly affected the road works.
During the annual dry season, Tran Van Thoi district is the area with the most frequent and severe subsidence and landslides in Ca Mau province.
The main cause of the above situation is drought, rapid evaporation, combined with people pumping and draining water for production, causing most of the canals and streams in the freshwater area to dry up. Meanwhile, the bottom of the canal is deep, the difference between the road surface and the current water level is large, causing a loss of counter-pressure and subsidence.
In 9 communes and towns of Tran Van Thoi district, there are currently dozens of dry canals and ditches.
On February 20, nearly 100 meters of embankment in front of the Khanh Hung Commune People's Committee headquarters collapsed, causing many cracks, with some places having holes nearly 2 meters deep.
A nearly 40-meter-long subsidence point at Quang Hao canal, in Binh Minh 2 hamlet, Tran Hoi commune, Tran Van Thoi district. The road on the southern bank of Quang Hao canal has been invested, built and put into use for more than a year now.
Landslides disrupt traffic, people have to park their vehicles and walk across a stretch of road
Local people said they have never seen the water in rivers and canals dry up as quickly as this year. The drought not only causes subsidence and landslides but also makes waterways impossible to travel. This makes it difficult for people to transport goods and agricultural products.
The People's Committee of Tran Van Thoi District recommends that people prune trees to reduce the load and limit landslides; encourage people to use water economically, not to dredge land, or build houses along rivers and canals, which increases the risk of subsidence and landslides.
