On the morning of February 18, Deputy Minister of Transport Nguyen Xuan Sang and a working delegation from the Ministry of Transport and the Long An Department of Transport conducted a field survey of National Highway 62 through Long An.
Accordingly, the delegation traveled along National Highway 62 from the starting point at Km 4, Tan An City to the end point at Binh Hiep International Border Gate in Kien Tuong Town.
Deputy Minister of Transport Nguyen Xuan Sang inspected National Highway 62.
At the Tan Thanh town bypass stop, Tan Thanh district, Long An province, Deputy Minister Nguyen Xuan Sang requested the locality to urgently clear the land to ensure the construction of upgrading and renovating National Highway 62 is smooth and safe.
Previously, the Government approved the project to upgrade and renovate three national highways in the Mekong Delta, including National Highway 62 connecting Long An with several provinces in the West. The total investment for all three national highways is expected to be over VND7,100 billion.
Accordingly, National Highway 62 will be upgraded and renovated into a level III plain road, with a design speed of 80km/h, a road surface width of 11m, including 2 lanes for motor vehicles and 2 lanes for non-motor vehicles. Some sections through urban areas, towns and townships will have the current cross-section.
Route direction follows the existing direction, except for the section through Tan Thanh town, Tan Thanh district (Long An), a new bypass route will be built from Km 41+100 - Km 49+150.
National Highway 62 through Long An province has a narrow road surface, making traffic very dangerous because many trucks occupy the entire road.
National Highway 62 connects National Highway 1 from Tan An City through Thanh Hoa, Tan Thanh, Moc Hoa districts, Kien Tuong town and part of Thu Thua district to Binh Hiep international border gate bordering Cambodia, about 76km long.
The road has been under construction for nearly 24 years, but the narrow and degraded road surface has greatly affected the attraction of businesses to invest in the border economic zone and has the potential to cause traffic accidents.
On the route, there is an overlapping section with National Highway N2, stretching from Thanh Hoa district to Tan Thanh for more than 10km, so traffic congestion occurs frequently, especially during holidays and Tet when many people return to the Western provinces.
This is very good news for the people of Dong Thap Muoi area, Long An province, because after decades of exploitation and use, the road has seriously degraded, no longer meeting the travel and freight transport needs of the people, and posing a potential risk of traffic accidents.
Over the past time, Long An voters have continuously petitioned to soon upgrade and expand this national highway.
In particular, when the upgrade and expansion is completed, National Highway 62 will be a "lever" in economic development, attracting investment, especially the border trade economy in the Dong Thap Muoi area of Long An province.
