On March 23, the People's Committee of Quang Tri province said that it had just sent a document to the Salavan Provincial Government Committee (Laos) regarding the change of working hours at the La Lay International Border Gate (Dakrong District) and La Lay (Salavan Province).
In the first days of the year, coal was the largest import item from Laos to Vietnam through La Lay international border gate.
Accordingly, Quang Tri province proposed Salavan province to extend working hours at the border gate pair from 7am to 10pm every day, including holidays and weekends. Special cases will be handled at any time.
Currently, working hours at this pair of border gates are only from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.
In recent times, the functional forces of the two provinces at the La Lay international border gate have closely coordinated, creating favorable conditions for the entry and exit, import and export activities of people and businesses on both sides.
Quang Tri proposes to increase operating hours at La Lay border gate
Thanks to that, trade and investment cooperation has increasingly had positive changes; the flow of people, vehicles and goods through these two border gates has increased, especially the import and export of coal from Laos to Vietnam.
In 2023, more than 2 million tons of coal were imported from Sekong province (Laos) to Quang Tri through La Lay border gate. Every day, about 400 - 500 vehicles pass between the two border gates.
It is expected that by 2024, 11 million tons of coal will be exported by Laos through Quang Tri by road.
To further facilitate immigration and import-export activities, especially coal import-export activities, the People's Committee of Quang Tri province proposed that the Salavan Provincial Government Committee unanimously report to the Lao government on changing working hours at the border gate pair.
