On September 19, information from the People's Committee of Quang Binh province said that it had requested the People's Committee of Quang Ninh district to preside over and coordinate with relevant departments and branches to inspect the incident of trampling on stalactites mentioned by Thanh Nien Newspaper, and take measures to correct violations (if any).

Specifically, the People's Committee of Quang Binh province requested the locality and related units to take measures to correct violations, at the same time supervise the management and conservation of caves and report to the Provincial People's Committee no later than October 1.

Mr. Hoang Trong Duc, Chairman of the People's Committee of Truong Son Commune (Quang Ninh District, Quang Binh) has issued a document requesting agencies, businesses, tourists and residents to avoid affecting caves in the area.

Specifically, recently in Truong Son commune, a new cave was discovered, about 1.8 km long, 20 - 50 m wide and 35 m high on average. The cave was named Son Nu, and was surveyed and evaluated by local authorities and a tourism company.

The People's Committee of Truong Son commune has issued a document requesting businesses and people not to impact the environment inside the caves.

To preserve the caves and develop tourism in the commune, ensuring the integrity of the stalactites in the caves, the People's Committee of Truong Son commune requested agencies, businesses, villages and hamlets in the area to do a good job of propaganda to the people and tourists...

When exploring caves, avoid impacting the environment and surrounding landscape, and especially do not climb, trample or come into direct contact with stalactites. Stalactites are very sensitive to human impact, which will cause the calcium layer on the stalactite surface to wash away, and it will take a very long time to regain it.

"We have asked businesses and people when visiting not to impact the environment around the cave, especially the stalactites. Regarding the group of people who trampled on the stalactites in Son Nu cave, because it was their first time coming into contact with stalactites and they did not have knowledge, the above behavior occurred. We have worked with them and reminded them to correct them," said Mr. Duc.

Mr. Howard Limbert, Expedition Leader of the British Royal Cave Association, said that the stalactites and stalagmites in the cave are very fragile entities. Stalactites are masterpieces created from the essence of rock and water over a very long time, possibly hundreds of millions of years.

The recent spread of people standing and sitting on stalactites in Son Nu Cave on social media, Mr. Howard Limbert said, is a rough and harmful impact on the stalactites, and timely measures need to be taken to protect the stalactite system in this cave.

Previously, Thanh Nien reported that local people had just discovered a new cave in Diu Do village, Truong Son commune (Quang Ninh district, Quang Binh). After being discovered, local authorities and a travel company organized a survey to assess the overall situation and explore further.

However, during the process, some people trampled and sat on stalactites in Son Nu cave.
