Candidates taking the Ministry of Public Security's competency assessment test this morning, July 7

At the examination site of Ho Chi Minh City University of Technical Education, from 6 am, many candidates were present with their parents to prepare for the final exam of their "student life". According to our quick survey, many families came from the provinces of the West and South Central. Therefore, in addition to necessary items for the exam such as atlases and computers, candidates and parents also brought many suitcases, bags, and backpacks to store belongings and clothes.

This recalls the image of the university entrance exam in the 2010s, when candidates and their parents had to pack their luggage, then catch a bus or train to big cities early to prepare for the exam, instead of taking the exam in their own locality like the National High School Exam, or later the High School Graduation Exam.

Seeing candidates from all over the country, I also advised my child that he was just a tiny tree in the U Minh forest, but he should try to let everyone see his foliage among the countless ancient trees.

Lan Thanh, a student at Vinh Hung High School (Long An), shared that two days ago, she and her mother traveled from Vinh Hung District to Ho Chi Minh City to complete the exam procedures. The female student said that she wanted to enter the People's Police University (District 7, Ho Chi Minh City) and mainly studied for the exam by herself. "The biggest source of motivation for me is the expectations of my grandparents and parents and my love for the green uniform of the industry," Thanh shared.

Parents from the provinces are waiting with suitcases and bags for their children to finish the exam.

Standing next to her, Ms. Anh Hong, the student's mother, said it took her and her daughter about 4 hours by bus to get to the exam site. The day before, they had both slept at a motel nearby. "Seeing candidates from all over the country coming here, I also advised my daughter that she is just a tiny tree in the U Minh forest, but try to let everyone see her foliage among the countless ancient trees," the female parent shared.

Dinh Chuong, a student at Hieu Nhon Secondary and High School (Vinh Long), said he and his father went to Ho Chi Minh City on Thursday, July 4, even though the exam registration procedures only began on July 6. The father and son followed the school's convoy, which included other students taking the exam. "After finishing the high school graduation exam, I continued to review for the Ministry of Public Security's competency assessment exam. Right now, I'm quite comfortable. If I don't pass, I can go back to study another major," Chuong shared.

Notably, a candidate from Quang Ngai said that she and her mother traveled more than 700km to Ho Chi Minh City to take the exam. Setting the goal of entering the People's Police University since the beginning of grade 12, the female student said that she divided her time into studying at school in the morning and going online in the evening to practice more questions. "I chose to take the exam code CA2 with the literature essay section because I had previously chosen block D (math, literature, English) in the high school graduation exam," this candidate shared.

Police officers are present outside the exam hall to guide candidates.

According to the Ministry of Public Security, this is the third year the competency assessment exam has been held, attracting nearly 18,000 candidates, an increase of 20% compared to 2023. The exam results will be used to consider admission to 8 police schools according to method 3, which is combined with high school graduation exam scores, in which the competency assessment exam results account for 60%. About 80% of the more than 2,100 quotas for police schools in 2024 will be considered for admission in this way.

Notably, all universities and academies this year did not meet their direct admission quotas as planned. Most of the units announced that they would transfer the remaining quotas from methods 1 and 2 to method 3. Previously, there were 11 candidates admitted under method 1 (winning national and international prizes) and 116 candidates admitted under method 2 (having foreign language proficiency equivalent to IELTS 7.5 or higher).

The structure of the Ministry of Public Security's competency assessment test consists of two parts: multiple choice and essay. The multiple choice part focuses on testing knowledge in the current high school program, including knowledge of natural sciences, social sciences, and foreign languages; in the essay part, candidates can choose one of two contents: math (code CA1) or literature (code CA2).
