When exposed to hot weather, the body becomes dehydrated, easily causing nasal mucosal congestion, making many people, especially children, susceptible to nosebleeds.

Use more vitamin supplements for hot summer days.

Master, Specialist Doctor I Nguyen Thi Thuc Nhu, Department of Otorhinolaryngology, Tam Anh General Hospital, Ho Chi Minh City said that since the beginning of May, many patients have come to the clinic because of nosebleeds in hot weather. Most of them are children between 7-10 years old and the elderly.

Ms. Trieu Thi Hai (Binh Thanh District) noticed that her 10-year-old son often had nosebleeds, even during the day when he was studying in class or sleeping at night. Worried that her son had a serious illness, she took him to Tam Anh General Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City. Similar to Ms. Hai's son, Ms. Le Thi Minh (Tan Binh District) said that her 7-year-old daughter also had nosebleeds in class many times.

Doctor Thuc Nhu said that through examination of the patient, no dangerous abnormalities were detected in the child.

Recently, Ho Chi Minh City and the Southern provinces are entering a "record" hot period of the year with temperatures reaching nearly 38 degrees Celsius on some days, and peak outdoor temperatures reaching 39-40 degrees Celsius. The weather in the North is also forecast to be hot this week.

According to Dr. Thuc Nhu, hot weather is the cause of increased body temperature, dehydration, affecting the nasal mucosa, congestion and bleeding. Children and the elderly are the ones most affected by hot weather due to weak immunity, susceptible to sinusitis and poor adaptation to harsh conditions. In particular, children aged 7-10 are active, do not have good disease prevention awareness, and have thin nasal blood vessels that are easily broken and cause nosebleeds.

Nosebleeds due to heat are very common in the summer, especially in people with sinusitis and are not a cause for concern if the bleeding is well controlled. However, it is necessary to pay attention to proper treatment so that the patient does not swallow blood, which can easily cause vomiting or be confused with gastrointestinal bleeding. Or choking can lead to airway obstruction, causing aspiration pneumonia.

Doctor Thuc Nhu gives instructions on how to handle nosebleeds as follows: The patient should sit up straight, head slightly tilted forward; use two fingers to pinch the nostrils and breathe through the mouth to stop the bleeding, if the blood flows down the throat, spit it out, do not swallow because it will cause vomiting. The person with nosebleeds should keep this position for about 5 minutes to allow the blood in the nose to clot.

Use a wet towel to wipe the blood around your nose, being careful not to wipe inside the nose to avoid touching the injured area and causing the blood to flow again.

When giving first aid for a nosebleed, the patient should not tilt their head back or inhale the blood. This will cause the blood to flow back into the stomach, causing vomiting, or to be inhaled into the lungs.

Do not move immediately after stopping the bleeding. Instead, sit or lie down and rest. Avoid heavy work for a few days. Do not touch your nose immediately after stopping the bleeding to avoid re-bleeding.

To prevent nosebleeds during hot weather, Dr. Thuc Nhu advises that people should limit going outdoors during peak hours of sunlight (from 11am to 2pm). When going outdoors, they should wear specialized sun-protective clothing that is UV-resistant but thin and airy.

People should avoid wearing thick, airtight sun protection clothing that causes the body to overheat, leading to heat shock or nosebleeds. Limit alcohol consumption, which irritates the capillaries in the nasal mucosa.

For children, to prevent nosebleeds in hot weather, parents should give their children plenty of water and fruit juice, and instruct them to avoid the sun when going outdoors, such as wearing hats, masks, and not going barefoot. In their diet, children should be given more cool green vegetables such as Malabar spinach, water spinach, and amaranth; and should limit hot foods such as instant noodles and fried foods.

For the elderly, they should not go out in the sun too much, try to drink plenty of water, take time to rest; increase green vegetables and fruits in meals; especially, do not sleep in small, stuffy rooms.

Nosebleeds due to heat are not dangerous, but nosebleeds can also be a symptom of some underlying medical conditions such as cancer, maxillofacial trauma, sinusitis, etc. Therefore, patients should go to the hospital for examination if nosebleeds are frequent and repeated many times in 2 weeks for proper diagnosis and treatment," Dr. Thuc Nhu recommended.
