"Sister-in-law" starring Viet Huong and Hong Dao is the first Vietnamese film to gross hundreds of billions in 2025.

According to the latest statistics on January 13 from the independent unit Box Office Vietnam, the film Sister in law grossed over 4.5 billion VND with 3,042 screenings last weekend.

Thus, since its premiere on December 20 until now, Sister in law with revenue of more than 104.5 billion VND, becoming the first Vietnamese film with revenue of 100 billion VND in 2025.

The 100-minute film, featuring a cast of talented actors such as Viet Huong, Hong Dao, Le Khanh, Dinh Y Nhung and Ngoc Trinh, revolves around conflicts within a family. The story begins when Mrs. Nhi (played by Viet Huong) - the eldest daughter-in-law of the family decides to take advantage of her mother-in-law's death anniversary to gather all four sisters - biological children in the family - to announce that she will use her own money to renovate the old communal house before the storm comes.

"Sister-in-law" is the first Vietnamese film to surpass the 100 billion mark in 2025.

The decision of the two Nhis caused the hidden conflict between the sisters to explode. Gradually, the truth behind the "fake relationship" between the sisters was revealed. The deepest secrets and pains in each individual were gradually peeled away. The film realistically portrayed the hidden corners of family life and marriage, thereby expressing sympathy for women.

Sister in law marked a clear improvement of Khuong Ngoc in the role of director, with a tight script, smooth storytelling. The impressive acting of the cast is also a big plus. However, the film still has some negative points such as the unskillful opening and a few scenes that are prolonged, as well as some scenes at the end of the film are illustrative, losing the naturalness.

Especially in the ending, the character Hai Nhi is over-emphasized, exalting the sacrifice of his sister-in-law. The director said he was inspired by a deceased relative of his. "I didn't try to paint a perfect image of this character, but wanted to build a sister-in-law based on the sympathetic perspective of her siblings," he said
