Developing bamboo forests in the direction of sustainable intensive farming

By September 2024, Ba Thuoc district had more than 11,000 hectares of bamboo forests. In recent months, the district has implemented the 2024 plan to intensively cultivate and restore 1,095 hectares of bamboo forests in the first year and care for and fertilize 390 hectares in the second year. Communes and towns in the district have proactively promoted the effectiveness of intensive bamboo forest development; trained households in techniques of care and fertilization for restoration; and developed a sustainable bamboo forest management plan to issue sustainable forest management certificates for bamboo forests. Households have been supported with funds to buy fertilizers for the first and second years of intensive bamboo forest restoration.

From 2021 to now, Ba Thuoc district has had 3,280 hectares of bamboo forests intensively restored. In fact, restoring poor quality bamboo forests has helped to increase the productivity and quality of bamboo forests. Specifically, the bamboo shoot growth coefficient increased by 1.5 times, the bamboo shoots are larger and the segments are longer. In the district, there are 5 companies, cooperatives and forest product processing facilities specializing in purchasing and processing bamboo products. Ba Thuoc district has built 12km of new forestry roads, creating favorable conditions for people to intensively cultivate, restore, care for, exploit and transport forest products for consumption. The value of bamboo trees has been increased, contributing to increasing the income of many bamboo growing households and bamboo processing enterprises.

Implementing Resolution No. 151/2015/NQ-HDND, dated December 11, 2015 of the Provincial People's Council on promulgating policies and mechanisms to encourage restructuring of Thanh Hoa's agricultural sector in the period of 2016-2020; Resolution No. 185/2021/NQ-HDND, dated December 10, 2021 of the Provincial People's Council on promulgating policies for agricultural, rural and farmer development in Thanh Hoa province in the period of 2022-2025, in recent years, the Provincial Forest Protection Department has coordinated with localities to disseminate to people in mountainous areas policies to support intensive cultivation of bamboo forests; policies to support the construction of forestry roads in concentrated production forest areas; training on techniques for caring for, fertilizing... bamboo restoration. People's Committees of key bamboo growing districts have surveyed and prepared technical design documents and estimates to serve the construction of upgrading and renovating forestry roads. By mid-September 2024, the districts in the intensive bamboo cultivation area in the mountainous area had basically completed the implementation of the plan for intensive bamboo cultivation and restoration in 2024: intensive cultivation of 4,115 hectares of bamboo forests in the first year and 2,260 hectares of bamboo forests in the second year. As a result, from 2016 to mid-September 2024, the districts in the concentrated intensive bamboo cultivation area, including Quan Hoa, Quan Son, Lang Chanh, Ba Thuoc, Ngoc Lac, Thuong Xuan, and Cam Thuy, restored and intensively cultivated 28,290 hectares of bamboo, bringing the total area of ​​intensive bamboo cultivation in the province to 44,520 hectares. This is the area of ​​bamboo forest that is intensively cultivated, cared for, and fertilized according to the correct techniques, the bamboo trees grow and develop well, giving higher yields than traditional bamboo forests; 136km of new forestry roads are built.

The effectiveness of the province's policy on developing intensive bamboo areas has fundamentally raised the awareness of local authorities and people in the management, protection, development and sustainable exploitation of bamboo forests. Changing the practice of extensive farming, without fertilizing and caring for bamboo forests, to intensive farming, fertilizing and caring for bamboo forests according to technical procedures. Many forestry roads have been renovated, creating favorable conditions for caring for, exploiting and transporting bamboo for consumption. Restoring poor-quality bamboo forests has significantly increased the productivity and quality of bamboo forests. Since then, the value of bamboo trees has been raised, contributing to increasing the income of many bamboo farmers and bamboo processing enterprises.
