The 60th anniversary of the Binh Gia victory (December 2, 1964 - December 2, 2024) is an important occasion to review the glorious history of the Vietnamese people in the resistance war against the US to save the country. This victory not only marked an important turning point in the fight for national independence and freedom but also served as a lesson in patriotism, solidarity and indomitable will of our army and people.
Historical significance
The Binh Gia victory took place in the context of the Vietnamese people's resistance war against the US entering its most difficult phase. After the failure of the pacification plan and the "Special War" initiated by the US, our army and people made important strides in counterattacking and winning. In particular, the Binh Gia victory was one of the typical battles of the Southern Liberation Army, not only having tactical significance but also clearly affirming the military strength, will and intelligence of the Vietnamese revolution.
The Battle of Binh Gia lasted from late December 1964 to early January 1965 in Binh Gia, present-day Ba Ria - Vung Tau province. Accordingly, from late 1964, to save the Saigon army from defeat, the US and its puppet government quickly implemented a key pacification plan, organizing the Binh Gia, Duc Thanh, Long Dien, Xuyen Moc, and Dat Do areas into 4 military sub-regions. Each sub-region had from 1 company to 1 security battalion stationed; in the "strategic hamlet" of Binh Gia, the enemy organized its own force to protect and fiercely fight against us. Due to the importance of Ba Ria province, the enemy tried to consolidate to create a defensive position to block the North and Northeast, protecting the Vung Tau naval base.
In compliance with the directives of the Central Military Commission, the General Command and the operational direction of the Winter-Spring 1964-1965 campaign, in early November 1964, the Regional Command decided to launch an attack campaign against the enemy in the area of Binh Gia - Duc Thanh - Road No. 2 (70 km east of Saigon), in the provinces of Ba Ria, Long Khanh, Bien Hoa, Binh Thuan (now in Ba Ria - Vung Tau, Dong Nai and southern Binh Thuan provinces) with an area of nearly 500 km2, in which the main direction was determined to be Ba Ria - Long Khanh, the coordinated directions were Nhon Trach, Long Thanh (Bien Hoa) and Hoai Duc, Tanh Linh (Binh Thuan) to destroy a part of the force, destroy the key pacification plan of the Saigon puppet government, support the uprising mass movement to destroy "strategic hamlets", promote guerrilla warfare, and expand the revolutionary base area.
The campaign was carried out in two phases: Phase 1 took place from December 2 to 17, 1964; Phase 2 took place from December 27, 1964 to January 3, 1965. As a result, we eliminated more than 1,700 enemies (captured 293), including destroying the 33rd Ranger Battalion, the 4th Marine Battalion and 1 M113 armored unit; damaged 3 Ranger battalions, 7 security companies; disintegrated most of the militia forces in the area; destroyed and damaged 45 military vehicles (mostly M113), shot down, burned, and damaged 56 aircraft of various types, captured more than 1,000 guns and nearly 100 communication devices of various types; destroyed a series of "strategic hamlets" along Highway 2 and Highway 15, liberated the Ham Tan suburbs and the entire Hoai Duc district, expanded the Hat Dich base (Ba Ria) connecting with War Zone D and Binh Thuan base, ensuring the base received weapons from the North by sea.
The victory of Binh Gia marked the collapse of the US's "Special War" strategy in South Vietnam, forcing the enemy to change their strategy, thereby contributing to creating important turning points in the entire resistance war.

According to the Central Propaganda Department, the forecast of the world and regional situation in the coming years is that there will be many complex, unpredictable and hard-to-predict changes, affecting the stability of the world, the region and each country. In the country, the socio-economic situation will change positively, firmly ensuring national defense, national security, social order and safety... but there are still many difficulties and challenges, so it is necessary to focus on studying, creatively and effectively applying the valuable lessons and experiences of the Binh Gia victory and typical battles and campaigns in the national liberation war to the cause of building and defending the Fatherland in the new period. In which, the entire Party, the entire people and the entire army will strongly promote patriotism, national spirit, socialist democracy, the strength of great national unity, cultural values, aspirations for national development, the strength of the Vietnamese people, successfully implementing the Resolution of the 13th National Party Congress to develop the country to become increasingly rich, prosperous, civilized and happy.
Along with that, continue to thoroughly grasp and effectively implement the Resolution of the 13th Central Committee on the Strategy for National Defense in the new situation; firmly maintain independence, autonomy, self-reliance, and self-strengthening; strengthen national defense and security potential; resolutely and persistently protect independence, sovereignty, unity, territorial integrity, seas, islands, and airspace; maintain a peaceful and stable environment for national development. Focus on building a revolutionary, disciplined, elite, and gradually modern People's Army and People's Public Security, prioritizing the modernization of a number of military branches, services, and forces, creating a solid foundation, striving by 2030 to build a revolutionary, disciplined, elite, modern, and politically strong People's Army and People's Public Security, meeting requirements and tasks in all situations...
The 60th anniversary of the Binh Gia Victory is an opportunity for us to review the revolutionary historical tradition, pay tribute to the contributions and sacrifices of our army and people in the resistance war against the US to save the country; propagate and educate patriotism, national pride, self-esteem, mettle, intelligence, strength and determination to fight and win of the Vietnamese people, contributing to comprehensively promoting the cause of innovation, building and firmly defending the socialist Vietnamese Fatherland in the new era.
