After a month of dull pain in his pelvic area that did not go away, Mr. Tan, 55 years old, suddenly discovered a giant lung cyst combined with lung cancer.

A month after being hospitalized, Mr. Tan (in Binh Thuan) had a dull pain in his pelvis and left buttock. He thought this was a symptom of osteoarthritis, so he took painkillers and massaged at home, but the condition did not improve.

He went to the local hospital for examination, CT scan showed a large air cyst in the right lung, measuring 16x11 cm, and was advised to go to a larger hospital for surgery.

Doctors are operating on a lung cancer patient.

According to doctors, pulmonary cysts are air bubbles that form abnormally in the lungs. When the cysts reach a large size (giant cysts), they can cause serious complications such as collapsed lungs, pneumothorax, and infections.

In addition to pathological causes (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), lower respiratory infections, bronchial asthma, etc.), smoking is a common risk factor for lung cysts. Taking a medical history, the doctor discovered that Mr. Tan had been smoking for 30 years, recently smoking 2 packs/day.

Dr. Nguyen Anh Dung, Head of Thoracic and Vascular Surgery Department, Tam Anh General Hospital, Ho Chi Minh City, said that to prevent lung diseases and lung cancer, it is necessary to quit smoking and avoid cigarette smoke;

In addition, people need to screen for lung cancer periodically with tests such as chest CT scans, especially for those with high risk factors; improve lung health by maintaining a healthy lifestyle, exercising regularly and avoiding exposure to air pollution factors.

If you have respiratory diseases such as COPD or asthma, you need to follow treatment to control the disease and prevent serious complications.

Regarding the harmful effects of tobacco, according to medical experts, tobacco contains thousands of toxic chemicals, of which at least 70 can cause cancer.

Studies have shown that long-term smoking increases the risk of serious diseases, such as cancer, cardiovascular disease, respiratory disease and damage to the nervous system: Nicotine has a strong addictive effect, altering the central nervous system, leading to addiction and causing psychological problems such as anxiety and depression.

In addition to those who directly use tobacco, those around them, especially children and pregnant women, are also severely affected by cigarette smoke.

Secondhand smoke: Non-smokers who are exposed to secondhand smoke are still at risk for the same diseases, such as lung cancer, cardiovascular disease, and respiratory diseases. Studies show that secondhand smoke is also a cause of diseases in children, such as bronchitis, acute respiratory illness, and even malnutrition.

Effects on pregnant women: Smoking during pregnancy can cause serious problems such as premature birth, stillbirth, and developmental problems in the fetus. Children born to mothers who smoke can suffer from respiratory problems, reduced intellectual development, and have a higher risk of cardiovascular disease as adults.

Tobacco use not only causes harm to health but also has a great impact on the economy of each country such as medical costs: The cost of treating tobacco-related diseases is very expensive, including the treatment of cancer, cardiovascular disease, respiratory diseases and many other diseases. These diseases increase the burden on the public health system and cause great losses in treatment costs.

Lost productivity: Smokers face a variety of health problems, leading to lost productivity due to illness, medical leave, or even premature death. This has a negative impact on the national economy.

Besides traditional cigarettes, products such as electronic cigarettes and heated tobacco products are gradually becoming a new serious problem in tobacco harm prevention.

These products, although advertised as less harmful, still contain chemicals that are hazardous to health, such as nicotine, formaldehyde, and other toxic substances.

Numerous studies have shown that e-cigarettes and heated tobacco products are not only unsafe, but can also lead to the same diseases as traditional cigarettes, such as lung cancer and cardiovascular disease. Furthermore, these products also increase the rate of young people starting to use tobacco, expanding the target audience for addiction.

To reduce the consequences of tobacco, there needs to be coordination between authorities, communities and health organizations in raising awareness, educating people about the harmful effects of tobacco, and creating strong policies to control the production, consumption and advertising of tobacco.

Banning tobacco advertising and restricting tobacco use in public places: Banning tobacco advertising and restricting tobacco use in public places will help reduce the prevalence of tobacco and protect public health.

High tax policy on tobacco: Increasing taxes on tobacco products can reduce demand and generate revenue for anti-tobacco campaigns.

Smoking cessation programs: Smoking cessation programs and support for smokers to quit will help reduce the rate of tobacco use and reduce its harm to public health.

Tobacco is one of the most dangerous pathogens for public health. The health, economic and social consequences caused by tobacco are enormous, requiring drastic intervention from authorities and the community.

Each individual also needs to raise awareness and take action to protect their own health and the health of those around them. Only when we join hands can tobacco be pushed back, and a healthy, smoke-free society become a reality.
