Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and opposition leaders have agreed to select Senator Anwaar-ul-Haq Kakar as caretaker prime minister to oversee the upcoming elections, the Prime Minister's Office announced. President Arif Alvi has approved the nomination.
Accordingly, Mr. Anwaar-ul-Haq Kakar will form a government and steer the country through the political and economic crisis until a new government is elected.
The decision was made after the final round of consultations between the current Pakistani government and the opposition in the National Assembly. According to the Pakistani Constitution, a new general election must be held after 90 days of the premature dissolution of the National Assembly. However, the latest census results show that the Election Commission needs time to redefine the constituency boundaries before setting a date for the election. The caretaker prime minister will make economic decisions in the context of the election that may be delayed.
Anwaar-ul-Haq Kakar assumed the role of caretaker prime minister at a time when Pakistan is in the midst of a political crisis and facing economic challenges. Pakistan's economy remains in a state of disarray with a huge foreign debt, high inflation and widespread unemployment as factories shut down due to lack of foreign currency to buy raw materials.
