AFP news agency on February 14 quoted Indonesian Defense Minister Prabowo Subianto declaring victory in the country's presidential election, after preliminary results showed he was on track to become the newly elected leader of Southeast Asia's largest economy.

"All the tallies, all the surveys... show that the Prabowo-Gibran ticket won in one round. This victory should be the victory of all Indonesians," he told a crowd in the capital Jakarta, referring to his running mate Gibran Rakabuming Raka.

Mr Prabowo expressed joy as quick vote counts showed he was on track to win the election in just one round of voting.

Unofficial figures showed Mr Prabowo won about 58% of the vote, according to four surveys based on sample ballots counted at polling stations across the country.

Candidate Anies Baswedan (55 years old), who served as governor of Jakarta from 2017-2022, won 25% of the votes.

Candidate Ganjar Pranowo (56 years old) won 17% of the vote. Mr. Ganjar is a nationalist politician, who has twice served as governor of Central Java province and is known as a "man of the people".

A preliminary count by the election commission took longer and showed Mr Prabowo winning 57.7% of the 6% of votes counted. Official results must be announced within 35 days of the election.

Mr. Prabowo (73 years old) followed a 28-year military career before entering business and politics. Vice presidential candidate Gibran Rakabuming Raka (37 years old) running with Mr. Prabowo is the son of President Joko Widodo.

During his campaign, Mr. Prabowo declared that he would strive to maintain positive relations with all countries, with Indonesia's non-aligned foreign policy and pursue a good neighborly policy. He focused on strengthening military power to protect the country.

Mr. Prabowo's strategy is to increase the country's prosperity, improve the quality of life and provide nutrition for all Indonesian children. In addition, he has made many commitments to build houses, hospitals, health centers and invest in education, science and technology.
