Yonhap news agency reported that according to the announcement of the South Korean Navy on March 11, the WMD prevention exercise took place in the waters off Gageodo Island in the southwest.
The maritime exercise focused on detecting and seizing ships suspected of carrying weapons of mass destruction-related cargo, with special forces boarding the ships by rappelling from UH-60 helicopters.
The event mobilized three warships, including the ROKS Jeonbuk frigate, along with a Navy task force and a coast guard vessel.
The drills came a day after South Korea and the United States kicked off their annual Freedom Shield military exercises, which have drawn repeated criticism from North Korea.
Separately, the Republic of Korea Navy's Second Fleet, responsible for defending the West Coast and the Yellow Sea, held defense drills on March 11 for the Pyeongtaek-Dangjin port.
The exercise also involved Army soldiers, police and coast guard personnel to train on response procedures for airborne, chemical, biological and radiological threats to the port's international terminal.
The South Korean military has been looking to bolster its ability to counter WMD threats as North Korea continues to accelerate its nuclear and missile development. The military plans to conduct a series of field exercises as part of the Freedom Shield exercise, which runs through March 20.
