Donald Trump said he will travel to Milwaukee on July 14, local time, where the Republican National Convention is taking place to officially elect him as the presidential candidate after the assassination attempt exacerbated the bitterly divided political situation in the US. "I was going to postpone my trip to Wisconsin and the Republican National Convention by 2 days, but I have just decided that I cannot let a shooter or a potential assassin force me to change my schedule or anything else. Therefore, I will be going to Milwaukee as scheduled," Trump wrote on the Truth Social website on July 14. Trump, 78, was holding a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania - one of the most competitive states in the US presidential election on November 5 - when he was shot in the right ear, leaving a bloodstain on his face. According to Trump's campaign, the former US President is healthy and has no major injuries other than the wound on his right ear. Trump will receive his formal nomination for president at the Republican National Convention, which opens in Milwaukee on July 15. Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Whatley told Fox News Sunday that U.S. officials are working to secure the convention site. Officials have been preparing security for months for the convention.Former US President Donald Trump's plane lands at Milwaukee Mitchell International Airport, Wisconsin, on July 14, a day after an assassination attempt during a campaign rally in Pennsylvania. No security changes are planned for the Republican National Convention despite the assassination attempt on Donald Trump, according to Reuters. Federal officials in charge of security at the Republican convention in Milwaukee do not plan to make any changes to security protocols following the assassination attempt on Donald Trump. “We are confident in our security plans for the event and we are ready to go. We do not anticipate any changes to security,” said Audrey Gibson-Cicchino, the Secret Service coordinator for the convention. Reuters pointed out that this statement shows that US officials are eager to ease security concerns at the Republican convention. US Secret Service officials and US police also emphasized that there was no clear threat identified for the Republican National Convention. The four-day convention is expected to draw more than 50,000 attendees. The Republican convention is scheduled to take place at the arena that is home to the NBA's Milwaukee Bucks. "We're very comfortable working with the Secret Service. We're working with 40 different law enforcement agencies on security," said Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Whatley. Whatley called on Republicans to use this moment as an opportunity to unite and overcome partisan divides. Senator Chris Coons of Delaware, a key ally of President Joe Biden, said the violence against Donald Trump will prompt Democrats and Republicans to beef up security, with the Democrats holding their convention in Chicago in August. "We need to be more dedicated than ever to making sure that the conventions and the rest of this presidential campaign are safe," he told NBC News.
