Review for high school graduation exam according to new regulations

The Ministry of Education and Training has issued guidelines for the high school graduation exam. This year's exam takes place in the context of many new regulations, so the current concern is how to review for students to ensure knowledge and skills to achieve the best results, at the same time have many advantages when participating in university admissions.

High schools organize exam review sessions for students this year while applying Circular 29 on extra teaching and learning in schools, so they must both comply with regulations and ensure students have a solid grasp of knowledge.

V COMPLY WITH REGULATIONS ON EXTRA TEACHING AND LEARNING WITH ENOUGH KNOWLEDGE

In previous years, schools could proactively arrange and organize graduation exam review for students based on the actual situation as well as the students' abilities. However, this year, following Circular 29, exam review as every year will become the organization of extra teaching and learning in schools. Circular 29 stipulates the arrangement of classes for students to review for graduation exams: "Each subject can be organized with no more than 2 extra lessons/week".

Therefore, the Department of Education and Training directs high schools to implement review plans for the high school graduation exam in accordance with regulations, ensuring that they do not last more than 3 weeks after the end of the school year, and at the same time, publicly and transparently implement the review plan.

Last week, after the Ministry of Education and Training officially confirmed the time for the high school graduation exam in 2025, many schools have come up with review solutions for 12th grade students, in order to both comply with regulations and ensure students have enough knowledge and skills needed to enter the important exam.

Ms. Le Thi Hong Anh, Vice Principal of Vo Van Kiet High School (District 8, Ho Chi Minh City), said that Circular 29 officially took effect in the middle of the second semester of this school year, so this is also a challenge for schools when organizing review activities to prepare for the high school graduation exam. Schools have quickly adjusted their educational plans, so that they are in accordance with regulations, but still have to ensure the knowledge content, capacity, and learning ability of students, suitable for the school and also suitable for the wishes of parents.

The school will comply with the provisions of Circular 29, which is not to collect money from students and will balance the budget to spend on this educational activity. If there is a lack of funds, the school will prepare a budget and ask for instructions from superiors to supplement it.

LEARNING DIRECTLY, ONLINE, INCREASE SELF-STUDY

In addition to the two compulsory subjects of the exam, math and literature, to meet the need for reviewing the two elective subjects, the school has organized a "running" class model in the afternoon. Accordingly, students will move from fixed classes to other classes to study the subjects they have chosen.

The Vice Principal of Vo Van Kiet High School added that the school will increase teachers to support students who have not met the requirements in terms of knowledge and skills. How to ensure that 12th grade students have a solid grasp of knowledge and are confident in taking this year's high school graduation exam?

When the 2024-2025 school year ends, the school will still organize review sessions for 12th grade students as usual, without collecting fees according to the regulations of Circular 29. "The school will comply with the regulations of Circular 29, which is not to collect money from students and will balance the budget to spend on this educational activity. If there is a lack of funds, the school will make an estimate and ask for instructions from superiors to supplement it," said Ms. Hong Anh.

Mr. Nguyen Tuong Thinh, Principal of Nguyen An Ninh High School (District 10, Ho Chi Minh City), said that the review class is organized in 2 types of classes: Class for average and above average students and average class to have conditions to supplement and systematize knowledge appropriately and effectively.

Students will review all 4 graduation exam subjects in the form of direct 2 periods/week/subject. In addition, the school arranges teachers to support online teaching with 3 periods/subject/week. At the same time, students can also study by themselves, do group exercises and discuss together based on the school's digital learning materials and other learning resources provided by teachers. Mr. Thinh said that the school always has special support for students with lower academic performance through some forms of separate review, building a proactive learning environment and always encouraging students' self-study spirit.

According to the professional plan of Nguyen An Ninh High School, 12th grade students will have 3 exams to evaluate their academic progress before taking the high school graduation exam at the end of June.

DO NOT ORGANIZE OVERWIDE REVIEWING

In order for schools to best prepare students for the high school graduation exam, which will apply the new program for the first time, while also ensuring regulations on extra teaching and learning organized in schools, Mr. Nguyen Bao Quoc, Deputy Director of the Department of Education and Training of Ho Chi Minh City, requested that high school principals direct professional groups to complete the 12th grade program according to the education plan before entering the high school graduation exam review period.

"High schools organize review and training for students who need to review for entrance exams and graduation exams. Do not organize review sessions indiscriminately, for the wrong subjects, ineffectively, and wastefully. Continue to effectively assign teachers to ensure the prescribed teaching hour quota, and prioritize appropriate assignments for final-level teachers to have maximum time to support students in reviewing for entrance exams," Mr. Nguyen Bao Quoc stated.

At the same time, the Department's leaders also noted the need to combine guidance for students to self-study, self-review and organize group review for students who are still having difficulties in studying. In addition, schools need to create conditions for classrooms, review rooms; open libraries and assign teachers to support students who are still having difficulties in the review process from the end of the school year to the high school graduation exam in accordance with the school's conditions.

Ho Chi Minh City proposes to increase the time for free graduation exam review

At the meeting between the Ministry of Education and Training and the Department of Education and Training of Ho Chi Minh City on the implementation of Circular 29 on March 21, Mr. Nguyen Thanh Tong, Principal of Tan Tuc High School (Binh Chanh District), said that in the past, parents often came to the school to complain about teachers forcing students to take extra classes. Since Circular 29 was issued, this situation no longer exists. This is considered a positive and promising result.

However, the Ministry of Education and Training's regulation that extra teaching in schools cannot exceed 2 periods per week is not appropriate. For example, in the work of fostering gifted students, if only 2 periods per week is too little. "I understand that Circular 29 is to encourage students to study on their own. But the specific characteristics of districts 6, 11, Binh Tan, Binh Chanh district, for example, have many schools in the suburbs, so there are many students who have not achieved the required level. These students need to be fostered more than 2 periods per week," said Mr. Tong.

According to the records of high schools, Mr. Nguyen Bao Quoc also said that free extra classes in schools of 2 periods/week are only suitable during the school year. After the school year ends, many schools have to organize extra classes for final year students to help them prepare for the high school graduation exam. The Department of Education and Training of Ho Chi Minh City proposed that after the end of the school year, schools are allowed to teach free extra classes of no more than 5 periods/week.
