In Dong Lo residential group, Dai Dinh town, Tam Dao district (Vinh Phuc province), if you ask about Mr. Nguyen Van Ngoc and Ms. Dang Thi Xoa, everyone will know. Mr. Ngoc and his wife have successfully built a cobra breeding model with high income, becoming a typical example of economic development in the locality.
Before coming to the cobra farming profession, Mr. Ngoc and his wife used to raise pigs, cows and chickens but the economic efficiency was not high.
On a trip with a close friend to Vinh Son commune, Vinh Tuong district - the capital of snake farming in Vinh Phuc province, I realized that snake farming here is very developed, has high economic efficiency and sustainable income.
Mr. Ngoc said to himself: “In Tam Dao, the number of households raising cobras for sale can be counted on the fingers, while the demand for using specialties to serve tourists is quite potential. Why don’t I learn the profession of raising snakes to develop it in my hometown, both serving tourists and enriching my family!”
When the idea flashed in his mind, the determination to get rich rose in the heart of the honest farmer.
In 2008, discussing with his wife about going to learn the profession of raising cobras in Vinh Son commune, Mr. Ngoc received the high consensus of Ms. Xoa - a gentle and hard-working San Diu ethnic woman.
She saved up and gathered the family's savings, prepared supplies for Ngoc to go to school to learn how to raise cobras with the determination to overcome difficult circumstances and become rich.
After years of living and working as an assistant at large-scale cobra farms in Vinh Son commune, Mr. Ngoc has accumulated a lot of knowledge and experience in raising cobras, from mating pairs, laying eggs, hatching eggs, raising herds, caring for and cleaning cages to preparing seasonal food for cobras...
Mr. Nguyen Van Ngoc and his wife, Ms. Dang Thi Xoa, Dong Lo residential group, Dai Dinh town, Tam Dao district (Vinh Phuc province) raise cobras and are taking care of their family's cobras.
After learning the snake breeding profession, Mr. Ngoc returned to his hometown to borrow money from the bank. With the support of relatives and family, he built a cage to raise 100 common cobras.
Thanks to acquiring full knowledge and experience in snake farming from long-time snake farmers in Vinh Son, Mr. Ngoc did not encounter many difficulties in starting his business.
The first batch of cobras grew and developed well, bringing his family an income of 20 million VND. He continued to invest another 250 million VND to build 2 more snake cages with an area of nearly 200 square meters, bringing the total number of snakes raised to more than 300.
To maintain a healthy environment for cobras to grow, and at the same time, ensure safety during the raising process, he focuses on building airy cages with sturdy roofs, dividing cages into different ages for laying snakes, breeding snakes and commercial snakes, and cleaning them daily.
According to Mr. Ngoc, each year, cobras only eat for 6 months, from the 3rd to the 10th lunar month. The rest of the time, the snakes hibernate, so taking care of them is not too difficult.
The main food of cobras is toads, frogs, mice, chicks, etc. Raising chickens and pigs depends a lot on the market. When they can't sell them, they still have to worry about money to buy animal feed. However, raising venomous snakes is more convenient because the snakes hibernate for 6 months, so there's no need to worry about wasting food.
King cobras have a stable market, less risk and disease, so the economic efficiency is higher. Currently, with an average of nearly 400 king cobras per litter, Mr. Ngoc's family earns more than 200 million VND/year.
Sharing about the profession of raising venomous snakes and his determination to improve his family's economy, Mr. Ngoc said: "For me, learning the profession quickly was partly due to my determination to change my life, and partly because since I was a child I loved and was interested in learning about the life and unique beauty of reptiles, including snakes.
However, the most important thing is the sharing of joys and sorrows between husband and wife. My wife always encouraged me when I was in trouble; regardless of the sun and rain for months, she accompanied me to help me during my vocational training; and diligently studied to help me take care of the snakes.
Because of that, even though I had a hard time learning how to raise venomous snakes, I was still very happy. All the fatigue disappeared and became the motivation for me to try harder to develop the family economy, to have the conditions to take care of and educate my children to study properly like now."
Thanks to consensus, the family of Mr. Nguyen Van Ngoc and Ms. Dang Thi Xoa not only became a typical example of good economic performance in the locality but also achieved the title of cultural family and was commended and rewarded by the locality.
