While families gather together at New Year's Eve to welcome the new year, on many streets in Dong Nai there are still people struggling to make a living.

They tried to stay to sell a little more stuff on the last night of the year of the Cat and the moment of transition of the new year of the Dragon.

Uncle Binh took the opportunity to lean against the edge of the apartment building's yard to rest after a long drive on the night of the 30th of Tet.

In Dong Nai, according to the reporter's records, most of the people who make a living on New Year's Eve are from poor families and want to earn a little extra to cover expenses in the new year.

At the moment of New Year's Eve, the whole city seemed to be awake. Traffic was bustling, people were returning home, people were leaving home to pick the first lucky branches of the year... the streets were noisy and bustling.

However, people are still busy trying to make a living. Some people stay behind to sell flower pots to make ends meet, others sell balloons, drinks, broken rice, salt, piggy banks, incense, cotton candy… to the last customers.

All of those people create a colorful picture at New Year's Eve, saying goodbye to the old year and welcoming the new year.

On New Year's Eve, Mr. Tam did not have time to go home but stayed behind to sell Tet decorations.

Sitting against the edge of the apartment building's yard to rest after a motorbike taxi ride on New Year's Eve, Mr. Nguyen Trong Binh, 65 years old, from the West, shared that he was so tired that he took a break and then continued his journey.

Mr. Binh said that his hometown is in the West, his wife has passed away, his children have their own families, so for the past ten years he has rented a room in Bien Hoa and worked as a security guard.

Every day after work, he drives a motorbike taxi to earn extra income.

Now that his health is weaker and there is no place to hire him as a security guard, Mr. Binh can only drive a motorbike taxi to make a living.

“I work sometimes, sometimes not, so my income is not much. As long as I am healthy, I have to work to ease the burden on my children.

“I have nowhere to go this Tet so I still go to work on New Year’s Eve, any extra ride is better than nothing. After the new year I will rest for a few days and then continue working, ” Mr. Binh said.

Mr. Binh is 65 years old but still does not want to be a burden to his children and grandchildren.

Mrs. Nguyen Thi Luong, from the North, did not return home to celebrate New Year's Eve but instead went out to collect and buy scrap metal.

Ms. Luong said that because her house is far away and train tickets are expensive, this year she will not return home but stay in Bien Hoa to celebrate Tet.

Because she doesn't have many siblings or relatives, on the 30th of Tet she still goes out to collect scrap metal and also to meet friends in the same situation, to chat and ease her homesickness.

Flower stalls that have not sold yet are selling at a discount and are willing to wait for customers on New Year's Eve.

"Everyone wants to go home for Tet, but there are still many burdens so we have to continue going out to earn a living.

I don't wish for anything, I just wish to be healthy, not sick so I can take care of myself," Ms. Luong shared.
