There are pairs of supplements that when combined together can cause adverse interactions, reduce absorption efficiency, and even harm health.
Vitamins A, D, E and K
Vitamins A, D, E, and K are all fat-soluble vitamins, meaning they are stored in the liver and fatty tissues of the body. Taking too much fat-soluble vitamins can lead to excessive accumulation in the body, causing side effects such as nausea, vomiting, headaches, dizziness, and even liver damage.
Vitamin A combined with high doses of vitamin D can cause hypercalcemia, leading to kidney and cardiovascular problems. Vitamin D combined with high doses of vitamin E can reduce the effects of vitamin K, causing blood clotting disorders. Vitamin E combined with high doses of vitamin K can reduce the antioxidant effects of vitamin E. Vitamin K combined with high doses of vitamin A can increase the risk of bleeding.
These vitamins should be taken at least 2 hours apart. Consult your doctor or dietitian before combining these vitamins, especially if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or have an underlying medical condition.

Fish oil and ginkgo biloba
Fish oil contains omega-3 fatty acids that are good for the heart, brain, and vision. Ginkgo biloba contains active ingredients that help increase blood circulation to the brain, improving memory. However, both of these types are blood thinners. Taking fish oil and ginkgo biloba together can increase the risk of bleeding, especially in people who are taking blood thinners or have a history of blood clotting disorders.
Fish oil and ginkgo should be taken at least 2 hours apart. Consult your doctor before combining fish oil and ginkgo, especially if you are taking blood thinners or have a history of bleeding disorders.
Copper and zinc
Copper and zinc are two essential minerals for the body, but they compete with each other for absorption. Taking copper and zinc at the same time can reduce the absorption of both minerals. Copper and zinc should be taken at least 2 hours apart. Get copper and zinc from a varied diet, rather than relying solely on supplements.
Vitamin C and B12
Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant that helps boost the immune system. Vitamin B12 is essential for blood cell formation and nerve function. Vitamin C can destroy vitamin B12 in the digestive tract, reducing its absorption. Vitamin C and B12 should be taken at least 2 hours apart.
Calcium and iron
Calcium is needed for strong bones, iron is needed for blood formation. Calcium can inhibit iron absorption. Calcium and iron should be taken at least 2 hours apart. Take iron with vitamin C to increase absorption. Get calcium and iron from a varied diet.
Magnesium and calcium/zinc
Magnesium helps regulate muscle and nerve function, calcium is needed for strong bones, and zinc supports the immune system. Magnesium can interfere with the absorption of calcium and zinc. Take magnesium at least 2 hours apart from calcium and zinc.
