UN News reported that as President of the 79th session of the UN General Assembly, Cameronian diplomat Philemon Yang delivered an opening speech. Accordingly, Mr. Yang called for increased international cooperation to address current cross-border challenges, such as climate change, conflict and armed violence.

Calling on countries to resolve ongoing conflicts, including in the Gaza Strip, Haiti, Ukraine and Africa's Great Lakes region, the diplomat said: "We must invest every effort to reduce tensions and instead build trust around the world."

For his part, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres affirmed that the international community is facing a world full of instability and the UN General Assembly is an indispensable mechanism, an important path towards a peaceful and equal future for all.

One of the most important UN events in 2024 is the Future Summit, which will be held on September 22-23.

The Summit is an opportunity for world leaders to discuss a range of pressing global issues, reaffirm their commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the UN Charter, strengthen cooperation and lay the foundations for a renewed multilateral system.

The conference also aims for a Future Compact to strengthen global cooperation and effectively respond to recent challenges for the benefit of all.

Meanwhile, the first day of the High-Level Week of the 79th UN General Assembly will begin on September 24, with the participation of heads of state and senior officials of UN member countries.

The theme of this year's high-level general discussion is "Leaving no one behind: Working together for the advancement of peace, sustainable development and human dignity for present and future generations".

The 79th session of the UN General Assembly marks an important milestone in the international community's efforts to accelerate progress towards the achievement of the 17 SDGs.

Earlier, on September 10, the 78th session of the UN General Assembly held its closing session, concluding a turbulent year of international diplomacy and emphasizing the need for a common spirit of determination among nations to face increasingly urgent challenges.

Speaking as the 78th session of the UN General Assembly concluded its final session, Trinidad and Tobago diplomat and President of the 78th UN General Assembly Dennis Francis said: “It is no exaggeration to say that the damage that people are doing to each other around the world is simply beyond imagination.”

Mr. Dennis Francis warned that if the world continues on its current trajectory, millions of people will face poverty by 2030 and the SDGs will become increasingly distant.

The President of the 78th UN General Assembly also affirmed that the world is witnessing unprecedented changes due to the explosion of the artificial intelligence (AI) revolution, digital technology and scientific innovation.

At the closing session, UN Secretary-General Guterres emphasized that the world has gone through a challenging year, affirming that the UN and the multilateral system can only operate effectively when the commitments of member states are implemented.
