Israel launches 'drastic operation' in West Bank

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu yesterday directed the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) to conduct a "decisive operation against terrorist centers" in the West Bank following the explosion on a bus near Tel Aviv on February 20, according to AFP.

Earlier, Israeli police said there had been explosions on three buses in two Israeli suburbs outside Tel Aviv and four explosive devices had been found, but there were no reports of casualties. Israeli media reported that the explosions occurred on buses that were parked at a bus stop and were unoccupied. No one has yet claimed responsibility for the bus explosions.

Israel mourns the bodies of its youngest hostages

The bus explosion occurred amid a fragile ceasefire in the Gaza Strip between Hamas and Israel after 16 months of conflict. Hamas on February 20 returned the bodies of what it said were four Israeli hostages, including a woman named Shiri Bibas and her two young sons. However, the IDF later determined that the body believed to be Shiri did not match any of the hostages held in Gaza and had not yet been identified.

Prime Minister Netanyahu on Thursday accused Hamas of acting with "indescribable shamelessness" by placing the body of a Gaza woman in a coffin instead of hostage Shiri. Netanyahu said Israel would make Hamas pay for not returning Shiri's body. Hamas said on Tuesday that Shiri's body appeared to have been mixed in with other bodies after an Israeli air strike hit the place where she was being held, Reuters reported.
