Medical workers accused Israel of carrying out an airstrike on a tent camp sheltering displaced families in the southern Gaza Strip on the morning of January 2.

The airstrike killed 10 people and injured 15 others. The Times of Israel reported that two senior Hamas officials were among the dead. Israel has not commented on the new information. Earlier, on January 1, while continuing to maintain pressure in northern Gaza, the Israeli army carried out an airstrike on Shejaia, a southern neighborhood of Gaza City, killing at least eight people.

Israel airstrikes across Gaza, more than 50 people killed

The move comes as Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz warned on January 1 that he would launch a major offensive on the Gaza Strip if Hamas did not secure the release of the hostages and stop airstrikes on Israel. According to AFP, citing a statement by Minister Katz, if Hamas did not secure the release of the hostages, it would be subjected to attacks of an intensity the Gaza Strip "has not experienced in a long time." Mr. Katz also stressed that the Israeli army would increase military operations in the Mediterranean strip until the hostages were released. Health authorities in the Gaza Strip said that since the conflict broke out in October 2023, at least 45,541 Palestinians, mostly women and children, have been killed. In addition, the number of injured people has exceeded 108,338.

In another development, former Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant has announced his resignation as a member of parliament and his retirement from politics. According to the former minister, it is time for him to stop, and he affirmed that he will continue to make every effort to return the hostages held by Hamas since October 7, 2023, to their families.
