Nguyen Thi Oanh and Hoang Nguyen Thanh break the national record for the 21km distance.

On January 1, two athletes Nguyen Thi Oanh and Hoang Nguyen Thanh broke two national records at the 2024 Vietnam International Half Marathon (21km distance), taking place in Hanoi.

In the advanced category of the women's event of the 2024 Vietnam International Half Marathon, two of Vietnam's top long-distance runners, Nguyen Thi Oanh (Bac Giang) and Le Thi Tuyet (Phu Yen), created a tense duel. The two maintained their competition throughout the 21km race, and only in the final meters was the winner decided. Nguyen Thi Oanh launched her signature sprint, breaking away and successfully defending her championship title of the 2024 Vietnam International Half Marathon. In addition, with a time of 1 hour 15.10 minutes, Nguyen Thi Oanh not only broke her own record at the tournament, but also broke her own national record for the half marathon (the old parameter was 1 hour 15.24 minutes). Sharing after finishing, Nguyen Thi Oanh said: "Today is really a great day for me. The race has many potential young people, especially Le Thi Tuyet. The two sisters had a great race when chasing each other throughout the journey. I was luckier in the final seconds of acceleration". In the advanced category of the men's event, Hoang Nguyen Thanh (Binh Phuoc) won the championship in his first participation.
In the first half of the race, Hoang Nguyen Thanh faced fierce competition from athletes Sanchai Namkhet, Chepkwony Kipkemei Victor, and Nguyen Van Lai. However, in the second half, Hoang Nguyen Thanh used a reasonable strategy to break away and finish first with a time of 1 hour 06.39 minutes. This also helped him break the national half-marathon record previously set by Do Quoc Luat (1 hour 7.99 minutes).

Starting first, the 10km advanced distance for men and women did not have any surprises. Two athletes from the Vietnam national athletics team, Nguyen Trung Cuong (Ha Tinh) and Pham Thi Hue (Quang Ninh), did not have to compete to finish first with results of 31 minutes 57 seconds and 35 minutes 48 seconds, respectively. The 2024 Vietnam International Half Marathon also has a completely new content and is the first race to create a playground for sports walking. The organizing committee and the Vietnam Athletics Federation hope that this will help sports walking soon find the next generation to succeed Nguyen Thanh Phuc and Nguyen Thanh Ngung in the national team.

Advanced women's 10km event: First place Pham Thi Hue - 35.48 minutes; second place Doan Thu Hang - 37.20 minutes; third place Dinh Thi Thu Huong - 41.28 minutes. Advanced men's 10km event: First place Nguyen Trung Cuong - 31 minutes 57.5 seconds; second place Luong Xuan Son - 33 minutes 59.5 seconds; third place Ha Minh Thai - 38 minutes 28.4 seconds. Advanced men's 5km event: First place Hoang Viet Vi Ly - 15.58 minutes; second place Nguyen Kim Bao Ngoc - 16.07 minutes; third place Le Van Thoa - 16.22 minutes. Advanced women's 5km event: First place Bui Thi Thu Ha - 16.49 minutes; Bui Thi Ngan - 17.32 minutes; third place Hoang Thi Ngoc Anh 17.37 minutes.
