The year 2024 saw many Vietnamese people successfully conquer (summit) the notoriously difficult peaks in the Himalayas snow mountain range in South Asia.
A week before reaching the top of Ama Dablam, Ms. Thanh Binh also successfully conquered the 6,119m high Lobuche peak, more than 10km away from Ama as the crow flies.
On November 14, Ms. Thanh Binh returned to Hanoi, ending a very successful trip and continuing to look forward to new mountain climbing trips in 2025.
The mountain is high, let the mountain be high
Previously, many Vietnamese people have tried to conquer different challenges in the rugged mountains of the "roof of the world".
Surgeon Ngo Hai Son (Viet Duc Friendship Hospital - Hanoi) spent a whole month in Pakistan to climb K2 - the second highest mountain in the world after Everest but notorious as "the most dangerous mountain in the world".
“K2 in the great Karakoram mountain range that spans the border between Pakistan and China. I started my 100km trek from Askoli in Skardu to K2 Base Camp.
After that, I had to practice acclimatizing by climbing up and down camps 1-2-3... of the mountain to help my body adapt to the altitude (rotation) for two weeks. After minimizing the risk of altitude sickness (AMS) and waiting for good weather, I officially started my journey to climb straight to the 8,611m peak on July 28," said Dr. Hai Son.
Thus, Dr. Hai Son became the second Vietnamese after Mr. Khai Nguyen (a technology engineer currently working in the US) to successfully conquer K2.
For those who love adventure sports like mountain climbing, the saying “failure is the mother of success” is very appropriate because previously, Dr. Son and engineer Khai climbed Manaslu in Nepal, but when they reached Camp 3 (6,800m), they were forced to turn back due to an avalanche.
By the end of September 2024, during the autumn-winter climbing season in Nepal, climbers/coaches Bui Van Ngoi, guide Do Huu Nam, businessman Nguyen Manh Duy and engineer Khai Nguyen took turns climbing Manaslu, 8,163m high (8th highest in the world) in the Himalayas.
Do Huu Nam successfully reached the top of Manaslu at nearly 6am on September 24, and engineer Khai Nguyen also summitted Manaslu on the morning of September 25. These are the first two Vietnamese people to be granted a certificate to summit Manaslu by the Nepalese Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Aviation.

Responding to Tuoi Tre, Ms. Nguyen Thanh Binh said: "If the Lobuche climbing route is not too difficult, as long as you keep going steadily, you will reach the destination, then Ama Dablam is a mountain with very challenging terrain, especially for women.
We had to climb ropes to cross many steep, dangerous, steep rocky slopes, requiring climbers to not only have good physical strength but also solid techniques.
Another important factor leading to success, according to Ms. Binh, is spirit.
“I prepared myself mentally to stay calm and complete my goals every day. I thank my teammates and the experienced Sherpa team for their good support.
The incident of another female climbing friend who came from Vietnam to join me on the trip but was forced to stop the journey midway unfortunately also made me more determined and motivated to summit Ama Dablam to make up for her.
Ms. Binh's companion on the trip to conquer the Lobuche and Ama Dablam peaks was mountain climbing coach Phan Thanh Nhien - one of the very few Vietnamese people who have conquered Everest.
Ms. Binh said: “Thanh Nhien is a long-time friend and also my first mountain climbing teacher. We understand each other very well on the journey. I always remember Nhien's words that to achieve my dream, there is no other way but to maintain daily practice and think positively about all problems.”

Everest Rendezvous
During the spring climbing trip in Nepal in April 2023, Phan Thanh Nhien and Thanh Binh climbed Everest.
Unfortunately, when she reached the height of 6,800m, Ms. Binh received the bad news from Vietnam that her father had passed away. In a state of confusion, Ms. Binh abandoned her journey and returned to Hanoi to attend her father's funeral with only her passport in hand.
“After that, I returned to Nepal to pack up my belongings. With the encouragement of the Sherpas, I tried climbing Everest again and reached Camp 3 (7,500m). Unfortunately, I could not continue because the weather was too bad and there was a big storm. I was forced to give up my dream and go down,” said Binh.
“The Everest journey is an indescribable memory for me. After that, I had a long silence as if to avoid, forget, and hide everything related to the mountain.
It was not until the first day of 2024 that I climbed Sa Mu U Bo mountain in Son La to welcome the first sunrise of the new year on the mountain top as a habit I maintain every year. At that moment, I realized that I could not give up climbing mountains. That I would come back," Ms. Binh shared her passion and determination.
So in 2024, Binh set out to conquer the "roof of Africa" Kilimanjaro (5,895m) in Tanzania, then Lobuche and Ama Dablam.
“These are journeys that help me regain my confidence and belief in myself, while also reaffirming my physical suitability for the harsh sport of mountain climbing.”
What about the unfinished Everest dream? This Hanoi woman who loves writing, painting and teaching art to children confided:
“I have completed the manuscript of a book titled Snow Peak, about unforgettable memories from Everest to share with the climbing community, which is expected to be released in the near future. And if God still loves me and gives me a chance after all that I have been through, I will return to conquer Mount Everest.”
“Every mountain I have climbed is a new page in my journey, helping me love life more and appreciate what I have. Conquering Manaslu is a journey to overcome my own limits.
It is not only a physical achievement but also a spiritual victory. This gives me strength in my life,” said Do Huu Nam, who conquered Ama Dablam peak on September 24.
