Pig farmers "looking forward" to Tet

Thời báo Ngân hàngThời báo Ngân hàng29/01/2024

Tet is the time when the demand for pork increases. Therefore, many farmers at this time always monitor the price fluctuations every day to choose the right time to sell their products, to make a little profit after a difficult year for the industry.

Liệu giá heo hơi có thể đạt mốc 60.000 đồng/kg trong những ngày sát Tết Nguyên đán Giáp Thìn 2024.
Can the price of live pigs reach 60,000 VND/kg in the days leading up to the Lunar New Year 2024?

There is still about half a month until the Lunar New Year of Giap Thin 2024, but the price of live pigs is still at the price range of 51,000 - 57,000 VND/kg. Will the price of live pigs reach 60,000 VND/kg from now until Tet as many pig farmers expect?

Purchasing power is still weak, prices are unlikely to increase sharply

The livestock wholesale market in Boi Cau commune, Binh Luc district is the largest pig market in Ha Nam province and also one of the largest markets in the North. However, the buying and selling situation near Tet holiday is much more gloomy than in previous years.

Mr. Nguyen The Chinh, Head of the Market Management Board, said that consumption compared to previous years has decreased significantly, even though it is near Tet, with about more than 1,000 pigs/day. Traders at the market both sell and watch market signals, only when they can sell will they dare to import pigs. The source of goods for the wholesale market depends on businesses, while small-scale farmers are very few.

Meanwhile, in Ngoc Lu (Binh Luc, Ha Nam), Mr. Tran Van Chung, Vice Chairman of Ngoc Lu Commune People's Committee informed that the local pig herd size has decreased by 2/3 compared to the previous period, to 20% of the total number of pig-raising households.

“Previously, most people lived by raising livestock, but now raising livestock is a loss, so many households have changed jobs. Those who are still of working age go to work for companies, those who are no longer of working age stay home and peel longan for hire,” Mr. Chung informed and added: “Now, Ngoc Lu is very deserted, especially during Tet.”

According to Mr. Nguyen Kim Doan, Vice President of Dong Nai Livestock Association, 2 months ago, many people promoted herd restoration with the hope of earning a small profit during the Lunar New Year. However, with the current price situation, plus the threat of African Swine Fever, it is very difficult to expect the price of live pigs to reach an average of 60,000 VND/kg in the coming days. In addition, the influx of imports from frozen meat to smuggled live pigs has made the domestic pig farming industry even more difficult.

"The low price of live pigs also brings with it the risk that traders are not interested even though it is near Tet," said Mr. Doan.

Smuggled pigs to Vietnam for Tet

According to the Dong Nai Livestock Association, the situation of pigs smuggled from Cambodia into Vietnam is still complicated, affecting domestic production, while increasing the risk of infection and spread of dangerous diseases in domestic pig herds.

"Due to the 2024 Lunar New Year, domestic consumption demand is increasing, so the situation of smuggled pigs continues to increase dramatically," said the Dong Nai Livestock Association.

Specifically, during the weeks from January 1-15, an average of 6,000-7,000 pigs were smuggled from Cambodia into Vietnam each night through several border gates in the southeastern provinces and the southwestern border.

The number of smuggled pigs accounts for about 30% of domestic livestock production sold every day. With the selling price fluctuating around 50,000 VND/kg of live pigs, the profit from smuggled pigs is causing domestic livestock farming to face numerous difficulties, forcing farmers to sell below production cost.

In addition, smuggled pigs flooding into our country also pose a risk of spreading disease, which in the future will seriously affect the total herd and cause a shortage of domestic supply.

Therefore, the Association recommends that the Prime Minister and the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development direct relevant agencies to establish working groups to inspect and supervise the control of veterinary forces in localities, and prevent the illegal transportation and trade of pigs into Vietnam on border lines, border gates, trails, and openings.

Faced with the above situation, a representative of the Department of Animal Husbandry emphasized that the livestock industry will coordinate with authorities to control diseases, as well as monitor the quality of pork products brought to the market.

Regarding the issue of controlling smuggled meat, this is a regular task that needs to be strengthened, especially near Tet. If not strictly controlled, smuggled meat will bring pathogens into Vietnam, causing new outbreaks of diseases, affecting food quality, and unfairly competing with domestic products.

“To prevent smuggling, the Prime Minister has requested to strengthen inspection and tighten this issue. In addition to the efforts of the agricultural sector, coordination between relevant agencies such as the police, border guards, customs…”, the representative of the Department of Animal Husbandry shared.

However, with regard to officially imported frozen pork products, the Department of Livestock Production said that when Vietnam integrates deeply into the economy, that is, joins the global playing field, domestic products must accept competition. Accordingly, the domestic livestock industry needs to proactively reduce production costs and ensure quality. Of course, Vietnam also studies more technical barriers to protect domestic livestock products.
