Russia speaks of 'unacceptable' incident, China calls for objective investigation

On October 23, the Kremlin reaffirmed that Russia had nothing to do with the damage caused to the Balticconnector gas pipeline between Finland and Estonia.

Speaking at a regular press conference, when asked about Latvian President Edgars Rinkevics' comment that Moscow might have to take responsibility for the damage to the Balticconnector pipeline, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov emphasized: "Threats aimed at Russia are unacceptable."

In an interview with LTV's Today's Question program on October 19, President Rinkevics said that the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) should choose to close the Baltic Sea to shipping if Russia is proven responsible for the damage to the Balticconnector gas pipeline.

Estonia, Latvia and Finland are all members of NATO.

* On the same day, the Chinese Foreign Ministry called for an "objective, fair and professional" investigation into the damage to the Balticconnector gas pipeline.

Speaking at a regular press conference, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Mao Ning said that China and Finland have begun communication on this issue.

Beijing hopes relevant parties can find out the truth as soon as possible.
