Reuters news agency quoted Russian officials as saying that Ukraine on November 10 attacked Moscow with at least 25 unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), forcing two major airports to close in the largest ever attack on Moscow.
Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said the drones were destroyed in the Ramenskoye and Kolomensky districts of Moscow region, as well as in the southwestern city of Domodedovo. Moscow region has a population of more than 21 million.
"According to preliminary information, there are no damages or casualties at the site of the debris fall. Emergency services are at the scene," Sobyanin said on the Telegram messaging app.
The Ramenskoye district, about 45 kilometers southeast of the Kremlin, was most recently targeted in September in what was then Ukraine’s largest attack on the Russian capital. Russian air defense units destroyed 20 UAVs in that attack.
"To ensure the safety of civil flights, temporary restrictions have been imposed on the operations of Domodedovo and Zhukovo airports," the Russian Federal Air Transport Agency (Rosaviatsia) said on Telegram. The restrictions began at 12:30 a.m. on November 10, Vietnam time, while it is unclear how long they will last.
In another development, Ukrainian drone attacks set fire to several non-residential buildings in Russia’s Kaluga and Bryansk regions on the night of November 9, Russian officials said on November 10. The Russian side destroyed 17 UAVs in Bryansk region.
Ukraine did not immediately comment on the reports.
