(Dan Tri) - The Russian Ministry of Defense continues to update the number of casualties of the Ukrainian army in recent months.
According to statistics from the Russian Defense Ministry, Ukraine has lost about 50,000 soldiers per month over the past six months due to the conflict.
The Russian Defense Ministry said that in January this year, 51,960 Ukrainian servicemen were killed or seriously injured. This figure was recorded as 48,470 in December and 60,805 in November last year.
Previously, the Russian Defense Ministry said in early January that Ukraine's losses in 2022 were estimated at about 118,500 servicemen and in 2023 at about 405,400 servicemen.
Data obtained from daily reports of the Russian Defense Ministry and other open sources from Russian Defense Ministry officials also show that Kiev has lost about 595,000 servicemen, including those killed or wounded in combat, in 2024, more than the total casualties in the first two years of the conflict.
According to statistics from Tass news agency (Russia), the Ukrainian armed forces have lost more than 1 million soldiers since Russia began its military campaign in February 2022.
The Russian Defense Ministry estimates that the number of new recruits entering Ukrainian military training centers has been only 30,000 per month since last summer, despite widespread mobilization efforts.
The Russian Defense Ministry also noted that, according to official Ukrainian figures, about 100,000 Ukrainian servicemen have left their units on their own since the conflict began in February 2022.
"The changes to the law prepared by the Kiev authorities under pressure from Western countries to reduce the conscription age from 25 to 18 are the only way for Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to delay the mass collapse of the frontline in Donbass for several more months," the Russian Defense Ministry said in a statement.
Last week, Nikolay Schur, an adviser to the Ukrainian president's office, said the Kiev government would propose amendments in the coming days, offering incentives for men aged 18 to 25 to voluntarily sign contracts with the armed forces.
Currently, men in this age group are not subject to mandatory military service under Ukrainian law. President Zelensky has so far maintained that the situation will not change, although the previous administration of US President Joe Biden reportedly pressured Kiev to lower the military age to 18.
Last week, the Ukrainian leader told Bloomberg that Kiev's military doesn't need more manpower, but more weapons from the West.
In December 2024, Russian Defense Minister Andrei Belousov said that in 2024, the Russian army gained control of about 4,500 square kilometers of territory, while the Ukrainian armed forces controlled less than 1% of the territory of the Lugansk region and 25-30% of the Donetsk, Zaporizhia and Kherson regions.
The head of the Russian Defense Ministry said Moscow aims to take control of all of Ukraine's Donetsk, Lugansk, Kherson and Zaporizhia regions by 2025. These are the four regions Russia has announced it will annex in 2022, following controversial referendums.
Russia now controls and claims to have annexed about a fifth of Ukraine's territory. Moscow now controls almost the entire Donbass region in eastern Ukraine and the entire Azov coast in the south.
US President Donald Trump said on January 21 that since the start of the war, Ukraine has lost about 700,000 troops. Meanwhile, according to Mr. Trump, the Russian army has suffered even greater losses, up to nearly 1 million people.
In June 2024, Russian President Vladimir Putin said Moscow's manpower losses in the conflict were a fraction of those on the Ukrainian side.
