Sports is one of the fields where fairness, rigor, and the spirit of fair-play are most clearly demonstrated. However, at the Ho Chi Minh City youth karate tournament held in mid-August 2024, there were many unpleasant scandals, although there was no final conclusion, but it more or less damaged the image of youth sports.
Specifically, Mr. Nguyen Manh Duong is the parent of an athlete born in 2013, a member of the Tan Binh District karate team (HCMC) who filed a complaint against Coach Nguyen Thi Mong Tam, the Tan Binh District karate team and the referee team of the 2024 HCMC youth karate tournament in the final match of the kumite for girls aged 10-11, 45 kg weight class, which took place on August 18, 2024.
Independent assessment of parents' accusations of wrongdoing at HCM City karate tournament
According to the petition, Mr. Duong said that Coach Nguyen Thi Mong Tam (head coach of Tan Binh district) had committed acts of cheating, exchanging medals of martial arts students for personal gain, forcing her athletes to withdraw to give medals to their opponents. After that, although they were allowed to continue competing, according to Mr. Duong, the referees had acted unfairly, completely changing the result of the match.
Mr. Nguyen Manh Duong posted a video of more than 3 minutes on social media, in which he pointed out the points that Mr. Duong thought the referee was not fair when scoring. For example, at the 16th second, Mr. Duong said that his daughter (the athlete in the blue shirt) kicked her opponent in the head but did not get any points. At the 46th second, his daughter punched her opponent in the stomach and kicked her in the head but also did not get any points. Similarly, in many other moments of the match, Mr. Duong pointed out the unusual points when his daughter punched many times but did not get any points.
After receiving a full report, the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Culture and Sports will announce the conclusion of the handling with an impartial viewpoint, without covering up or avoiding any violations. Mr. Ly Dai Nghia - Director of the Ho Chi Minh City Sports Training and Competition Center said that the head coach asking the athlete not to compete to give up the medal, if any, is a big deal. Therefore, the center has asked the Tan Binh unit to work directly with the head of this delegation and have a specific report before August 26.
This side also worked with the organizing committee and requested the referees of that match to meet, evaluate, and report back specifically. The Ho Chi Minh City Sports Training and Competition Center also worked with the Ho Chi Minh City Katare Federation, a professional social organization with the function of criticism. The federation agreed to establish a separate referee team to independently assess the match through the video provided by the parents. Mr. Ly Dai Nghia said that he would coordinate with the parties to work in a spirit of fairness and accuracy, then report the results to the Board of Directors of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Culture and Sports no later than August 27.
Is it true that athletes are forced to give up their medals?
We have to wait for the final conclusion from the authorities to confirm whether the coach and the referee team have violated the law or not. However, many readers also left comments wondering about the forms of punishment in case of cheating.
