NASA has combined the power of its two flagship space telescopes, the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) and the Hubble Space Telescope, to create the most comprehensive, colorful view yet of a giant galaxy cluster 4.3 billion light-years from Earth.
Using two powerful telescopes to probe the giant galaxy cluster scientifically named MACS0416 at different wavelengths, the devices found a series of giant stars, of different shapes and colors in the galaxy cluster.

The different colors indicate the distances of the various types of small galaxies within the host cluster, NASA said. In the image, many small blue and red galaxies appear scattered around the yellow lines of light.
Blue galaxies appear near the center of the giant galaxy cluster MACS0416, which is also the site of the most intense star formation activity. Red galaxies, which contain more cosmic dust, appear farther from the center of the host galaxy cluster.
One object in particular is magnified in the new image, an elongated, pinkish-red giant star nicknamed “Mothra.” According to NASA, the star was magnified at least 4,000 times for observation.

“We call MACS0416 the Christmas Tree Cluster because it is so colorful, containing bright, twinkling stellar masses within the cluster’s background,” describes Haojing Yan, professor of astronomy at the University of Missouri and lead author of the paper.
In addition, through two of NASA's top space telescopes, Professor Haojing Yan also identified more than a dozen spectral fluctuations caused by supernovae in galaxy clusters, which provided important data to deepen the understanding of the early universe, helping to solve questions about the expansion and star formation of the universe.
