Raised nearly half a meter, saving central Can Tho street from heavy flooding during heavy rain

Tran Van Hoai Street in the center of Can Tho city is being urgently upgraded and expanded to accommodate people's trading and traveling during the Lunar New Year 2025.

On January 17, speaking with Giao Thong Newspaper reporters, Mr. Tran Ngoc Thai, Deputy Director of the Project Management and Land Fund Development Board of Ninh Kieu District, Can Tho City, said that he is urging the contractor to quickly complete the asphalt paving of Tran Van Hoai Street (Xuan Khanh Ward, Ninh Kieu District) in the coming days.

"The contractor must finish laying asphalt and remove machinery and equipment before December 25 so that people can travel and do business during the days leading up to Lunar New Year," said Mr. Thai.

Tran Van Hoai Street is 525m long, the shortest dual carriageway in Can Tho City. This is an important route, connecting two major roads of the city, 3/2 and 30/4.

The upgrading and expansion of Tran Van Hoai Street has made people living on both sides of the street very excited. The reason is that for many years, this road has often been heavily flooded during heavy rains and high tides.

The asphalt paving of Tran Van Hoai street must be completed before December 25.

In September 2024, Ninh Kieu District People's Committee approved the design to expand and upgrade this road with a budget of nearly 40 billion VND.

Mr. Thai said that Tran Van Hoai Street currently has 9m sidewalks on each side. After the expansion, the road surface will be 3m wider on each side, and the remaining sidewalks will be 6m on each side. Thus, when completed, the road will have 6 lanes, with a right of way of 40m.

In addition to expanding the road, other technical infrastructure items such as sidewalks, drainage systems on both sides, lighting systems, technical trenches, and trees are also deployed synchronously.

Tran Van Hoai Street was submerged in heavy rain in October 2024.

Mr. Nguyen Hoang Giang, Director of Tri Viet Construction Investment Joint Stock Company (project contractor) said that Tran Van Hoai Street will be raised from 25cm to nearly 60cm depending on the section. Before Tet, the road surface will be raised and paved according to the current status.

"We will carry out road expansion, technical trench re-laying, drainage, and sidewalk renovation after Tet," Mr. Giang added.
