The US government said it will strengthen measures to restrict the export of chips and technology used for artificial intelligence (AI).
Under new regulations announced by the US government on January 13, the country will limit the number of AI chips that can be exported to most countries, while some close allies will not be affected by this restriction. At the same time, the US still maintains a ban on exporting AI chips to China, Russia, Iran and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea.
“The United States is a leader in AI, both in AI development and AI chip design, and it’s important that we maintain that,” said US Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo.
The US has just announced regulations restricting the export of AI chips.
According to Reuters, the new regulations are aimed at strengthening the regulations of the US President Joe Biden administration in preventing rivals like China from accessing advanced chips to develop competitive capabilities with Washington.
The new restrictions will be imposed on advanced graphics processing units (GPUs), which are used to power data centers that train AI models. The new rules will take effect 120 days after they are published, so enforcement will fall to the Trump administration.
AI has the potential to improve access to health care, education and food, among other benefits, but it could also help develop biological weapons and other weapons, and support cyberattacks and espionage.
US national security adviser Jake Sullivan said the US must prepare for a rapid increase in AI capabilities in the coming years, which could have economic and national security implications.
China's Ministry of Commerce said that in response to the new regulations from the US, China will take necessary measures to protect its legitimate rights and interests.

The new US decision has angered technology companies, who say it will affect sales and technology development potential in the US, as the number of chips exported is limited, according to The New York Times .
The European Commission (EC) also expressed concern about the Biden administration's measures, as some EU member states and businesses will be affected by the restrictions.
