In particular, the priority method of direct admission of excellent and talented students of high schools nationwide applies to candidates in the group of 5 excellent students with the highest average score of 3 years of high school or talented candidates with high achievements in sports and art competitions. Each high school is only allowed to introduce 1 student to a unit of Ho Chi Minh City National University.

In 2023, the University of Economics and Law received applications from 159 high schools nationwide applying for admission using this method. The major with the highest standard score using this method is economic mathematics with 28.60 points (on a scale of 30).

The priority admission method according to the regulations of Ho Chi Minh City National University has 4,242 applications with 13,493 wishes. These are candidates with excellent academic performance in 3 years of high school or are members of the team participating in the national excellent student exam, studying at 149 high schools according to regulations.

The five high schools with the highest number of candidates admitted by this method are: Gia Dinh High School (HCMC), Luong Van Chanh High School for the Gifted (Phu Yen province), Nguyen Quang Dieu High School for the Gifted (Dong Thap province), Tien Giang High School for the Gifted (Tien Giang province), Nguyen Binh Khiem High School for the Gifted (Quang Nam province). The benchmark for this method is the total average score of grades 10, 11, and 12 of the 3 subjects in the admission subject group registered by the candidate. Students from 83 specialized and gifted high schools are multiplied by a coefficient of 1.05 of the total score of the 3 subjects for admission.

According to Master Cu Xuan Tien, Head of Admissions and Student Affairs Department of the University of Economics and Law, in 2023, the benchmark score for this priority admission method has increased sharply compared to last year. All majors have a benchmark score of 80 points or higher (on a 90-point scale). To be admitted, candidates must have an average score of 8.9 or higher for each subject according to the admission combination. The majors with the most candidates registered and the highest benchmark scores are: international business, international economics and e-commerce.

Master Tien noted that candidates are officially admitted when they are recognized as graduating from high school in 2023. Candidates admitted under method 2 are only eligible for admission when the high school graduation exam scores of the subjects in the subject group that the candidate registered for admission must meet the threshold to ensure input quality (taking the 2023 high school exam scores according to the subjects in the admission group).

The list of qualified candidates will be updated by the school on the Ministry of Education and Training's information portal. Candidates need to follow the school's instructions to register and arrange their wishes according to the admission regulations to be officially recognized as admitted.
