Flight UA 198 took off from Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) at 2:00 p.m. on March 22, carrying 257 passengers and 13 crew members, scheduled to fly directly to Shanghai. However, about two hours later, the plane suddenly turned around and landed at San Francisco Airport at 5:00 p.m. local time.
The cause was determined to be that one of the pilots forgot to bring his passport – a required document to enter China. United Airlines said the airline quickly arranged a new crew to ensure that passengers could continue their journey that same evening.

Other passengers expressed their frustration and anger on social media. A post on RedNote, a Chinese Instagram-like social network, from a passenger on the flight asked: "How can someone make such a basic mistake at work?" The post quickly garnered more than 10,000 likes, reflecting the discontent of many.
The replacement flight with a new crew took off at 9:00 p.m. and landed in Shanghai in the early morning of March 24, causing passengers to be six hours behind schedule.
The incident not only disrupted flight UA 198 but also affected the return flight from Shanghai to Los Angeles (UA 199). A passenger on flight UA 199 said the flight was delayed for about 6 hours, forcing them to change their connecting flight tickets and rearrange their entire work schedule.
“I felt pretty frustrated,” the anonymous passenger said after landing at LAX on the night of March 23. “This incident caused me to have to adjust all my plans for the next day, which was really inconvenient.”
United Airlines is the world's second largest airline by passengers carried, with more than 140 million passengers per year.
