Two Chinese-developed aircraft to arrive in Hong Kong

According to the South China Morning Post (SCMP), on December 5, Hong Kong Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu said: “I welcome the first flight of the C919 and ARJ21. On December 16, the C919 will fly over Victoria Harbour. People can witness the first flight of the C919 in the sky of Hong Kong.”

Mr. Lee also said that Beijing has chosen Hong Kong as the first city for the C919 to make a flight outside mainland China.

According to SCMP, ARJ21 and C919 aircraft will arrive in Hong Kong from December 12-17 and will be displayed at Hong Kong International Airport.

In addition, if weather conditions are favorable, the C919 aircraft is expected to perform a demonstration flight over Victoria Harbour on December 16. The aircraft will also fly over Hong Kong Island twice for the people of the special administrative region to admire.

The Hong Kong Chief Executive also said that the development of the C919 and ARJ21 aircraft is an important milestone for China's aerospace manufacturing industry.

The move also reflects China's goal of developing Hong Kong's aerospace industry and strengthening the city's position as a global air transport hub.

"Trump card" competing with Boeing, Airbus

Both the C919 and ARJ21 aircraft are developed by the Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China (COMAC).

The ARJ21 is the first turboprop aircraft entirely designed and manufactured in China. It entered commercial service in 2016 and will be launched internationally in 2022 after being delivered to Indonesian airline TransNusa.

Meanwhile, the C919 is China's first domestically developed narrow-body passenger aircraft, designed to compete with the Boeing 737 and Airbus A320 and reduce Beijing's dependence on foreign technology. The C919 is scheduled to enter commercial service in 2023 and made its first commercial flight in May with China Eastern Airlines.

Mr. Victor Liu, Director General of the Civil Aviation Authority of Hong Kong, also said that the city has participated in the research and development of the C919 aircraft at the invitation of the Civil Aviation Administration of China since 2012.

“The Civil Aviation Authority of Hong Kong has played an active role in the evaluation of the C919. Last year, a flight operations expert from the Civil Aviation Authority of Hong Kong went to Shanghai for two months to participate in the inspection of the C919 T5 aircraft for crew training,” Liu said.

Speaking to reporters earlier this year, COMAC Deputy General Manager Zhang Yujin said the company had received about 1,200 orders for the C919.

Mr. Zhang also said that COMAC plans to increase the production capacity of the C919 aircraft to 150 aircraft/year within the next 5 years.
