With a monthly salary of 100 million VND, young staff shocked everyone when they complained "it's so small"

Báo Dân tríBáo Dân trí14/05/2023

According to the shared article, this employee was born in 1993, has been working for nearly 6 years in the supply chain industry (due to studying 1 year late and 1.5 years studying abroad for a master's degree), with a salary of 100 million VND/month, not including year-end bonus and performance bonus.

This person shared on the FTU Confessions forum (a forum for students and alumni of Foreign Trade University) as follows:

"According to everyone's assessment, is this an achievement worth being proud of? I ask because I heard that young TikTokers and Youtubers earn several hundred million/month. Or IT people with 4-5 years of experience have an average salary of over 5,000 USD/month, taking on a job outside can earn a few thousand (USD) more. Or many young people starting a business also have an income of up to several hundred (million VND).

Looking at these cases makes me feel like my current income is really small, not to mention I'm working in Supply Chain, an industry at high risk of being replaced by Tech, so I'm always worried.

The article "Is a salary of 100 million at 30 years old a proud achievement?" has led to a series of debates (Screenshot).

The above article immediately attracted thousands of comments with many opinions and responses.

The most popular comments were from a group of young people who felt the same as the author: they were shocked and confused by other people's salaries, and felt even more pressured when they saw their own salaries. Many people, after reading the article, declared "leave the group or else you will be pressured to death".

In addition, many comments also "turned back" on the information in the article, saying that this person made baseless comparisons. "TikToker, young Youtuber earns several hundred million/month" or "IT people with 4-5 years of experience have an average salary of over 5,000 USD/month, taking on outside work can earn a few thousand USD more" based only on conjecture and rumors.

"The income level of TikToker, Youtuber or IT that this young person gave for comparison may exist but is not common. For example, I am an IT with 5-6 years of experience, my income is only a little over 1,000 USD, this is also the salary of many people in this field. Why don't you compare with me?", said Mr. Le Nhu Khang, an IT employee working at a software company in Ho Chi Minh City.

Mr. Khang thinks that the way this young man posed the problem and compared the subjects was... wrong from the beginning.

This IT employee refused to comment on the information "30-year-old salary of 100 million VND" because he thought that this was not impossible. However, according to him, a person with a master's degree, working in a job with an income many times higher than the average, raised the same question as a new graduate. From the mindset of "is a salary of 100 million VND a proud achievement?", then worried about being replaced.

Ms. Nguyen Thao Thuong, 38 years old, a former student of Ho Chi Minh City University of Economics, said that this young employee's post is similar to the recent trend of showing off salaries. No matter where or on which forum, we can see posts about "tiny age, high salary".

It is obvious that people care about income when they go to work, but according to Ms. Thuong, when everything from success, achievements, and pride is only evaluated through income, it becomes unstable. This partly reflects that the values of many employees today only revolve around material things and money, and they unintentionally ignore many other important factors such as passion, interests, career values, and values for the community...

Right in the question "Is a salary of 100 million VND/month at 30 years old a proud achievement?" of the former Foreign Trade student above, Ms. Thuong assessed and expressed this person's worrying concept and definition of life.

"I am concerned about your concept and definition of the value of life. And I also feel sorry for you. Your income level can be said to be in the talented group, but your concept of achievement is limited to the word "money", Ms. Thuong analyzed.

Besides, many people also expressed sympathy about the "midlife crisis" which is a period of wavering confidence in work, income, and personal position, and becoming more insecure and confused when hearing information about other people's jobs, incomes, and other professions.

Many young people are confused when applying for a job because of "other people's salaries shared on social networks" (Illustration: HN).

Therefore, a lot of advice for young people is to focus on themselves and their work instead of "looking sideways" at other people's work and income. Focusing on yourself means constantly practicing, learning, making efforts... and also a way to respect yourself.

In addition, Mr. Hoang Manh Huy, a bank employee in Ho Chi Minh City, said that young employees need to keep a cool head when faced with information about "thousand dollar salaries" that is often shared on social networks today. There, many people tend to share unreal information, sometimes they are talking about... their dreams, not necessarily what they have. If you keep looking at that and tormenting yourself, you will never end your suffering.

Whether a salary of 100 million at the age of 30 is an achievement to be proud of or not, according to Mr. Huy, is an unanswerable question. Each person has their own concept of achievement, of pride, and no one can control the pride of others. Some people consider that salary an achievement because their value is concentrated there, but for many people, that is not enough to cover their living expenses...
