(CLO) On January 2, United Nations experts strongly criticized Israel's raid on Kamal Adwan Hospital, the last functioning medical facility in northern Gaza, calling it a serious violation of the right to health care in the besieged Palestinian territory.
The two special rapporteurs, Francesca Albanese and Tlaleng Mofokeng, stressed that the attack was part of a "destructive pattern" aimed at undermining the health system in Gaza, and called for an immediate end to such acts.
The Israeli delegation in Geneva has dismissed the UN allegations as not reflecting reality. The Israeli military claims to have killed more than 20 suspects and arrested more than 240, including the director of Kamal Adwan Hospital, Hossam Abu Safiyeh, who is accused of being a Hamas member. Hamas denies the allegations.
In a joint statement, Albanese and Mofokeng expressed deep concern over Abu Safiyeh's detention and called for his immediate release. They accused Israel of perpetuating a pattern of "harassment, abduction and arbitrary detention" of doctors and health workers.
Experts also point out that Israeli forces carry out extrajudicial executions near hospitals, including one case of a Palestinian man allegedly holding a white flag.

According to figures from the Hamas-run health authority, more than 1,057 Palestinian health workers have been killed since the conflict began in October 2023. The World Health Organization (WHO) has also recorded more than 1,273 attacks on health facilities in Gaza and the West Bank.
WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus warned that the pace of medical evacuations from Gaza was “extremely slow”, with more than 12,000 patients waiting for assistance. Since October 2023, only 5,383 people have been evacuated, including just 436 after the Rafah crossing was closed last May.
Tedros warned that at the current pace of evacuations, it could take five to 10 years to provide support for all critically ill patients. Meanwhile, many continue to deteriorate, and some have died due to a lack of timely care.
WHO calls for urgent action from the international community to resolve this impasse and ensure access to health for the people of Gaza.
