The announcement by the Swiss State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO) said that the two villages had surpassed many other domestic competitors such as Romoos village in the Lucerne region, or Saint Martin village in the Valais region.
The villages of Morcote and Saint-Ursanne convinced the UNWTO jury with their strong focus on sustainable development, along with various initiatives to preserve and promote cultural heritage, as well as to make it available to tourists.
With the award, the two villages will be supported by UNWTO in global image promotion campaigns.
Switzerland has five other villages that have received the prestigious UNWTO title: Andermatt, Gruyères, Morat, Saas Fee and Val Poschiavo.
