The show will have 210 episodes, each lasting 20 minutes, aimed at primary school children. Combining education and entertainment, the program aims to provide knowledge about science, nature, art, history through diverse activities such as games, gymnastics, dance, music, cuisine, fashion, comedy skits and manga.
The main character is Wakey, a DJ teddy bear who leads the show, along with 4 puppet characters with their own specialties, such as: Poppin - a history expert, Marigold - an art expert, Mosso - a nature expert, and Doene is a singer... The show includes many segments such as Wakey's Door - providing educational content on many subjects, Wakey Game with games or puzzles to wake up children, Wakey Selection introducing songs from all over...
In addition to the five main puppets, The Wakey Show also features characters from the globally beloved children's series Sesame Street, returning to NHK for the first time in 22 years. Through a collaborative segment called Elmo Likes It Rap, Elmo and his friends will encourage Japanese children to express themselves and share what they love through rap, in order to boost their self-confidence and mental health.
The inclusion of hip-hop music in the show shows a nod to current pop culture trends, highlighting how The Wakey Show has evolved into the 21st century. The show’s debut coincides with NHK’s 100th anniversary. According to Kidscreen, the collaboration with Sesame Street, which has been on NHK since 1971, is a highlight, adding to the show’s appeal, especially to audiences familiar with the brand.
The launch of The Wakey Show marks the first time in three years that NHK has introduced a new daily children's program, continuing the national broadcaster's illustrious tradition of providing quality educational content for young viewers. NHK Educational producer Masakazu Satou said the 7 a.m. time slot is a precious time for families to gather in front of the television.
The program will help children start their day in a positive way, in a context where the daily news often emphasizes negative or anxiety-provoking stories. He hopes the program will “wake up” children before school by providing interesting knowledge every day, helping them appreciate the world around them.
According to the World Happiness Report, Japan consistently ranks low in emotional well-being. That’s why The Wakey Show focuses on good vibes while engaging young viewers in topics they’re also learning about in school. “If we can help parents discover something new, even in small ways, I think we can help move society in a better direction,” Satou told The Japan Times. “I want it to be something that parents and children can enjoy together — like a public park where generations come together.”
