Before the decisive match for the top spot and a ticket to the next round with Korea, the Vietnamese women's volleyball team had a favorable start at ASIAD 19 when they easily defeated Nepal 3-0 on the opening day. This victory not only helped Thanh Thuy and her teammates have a good mentality, but also gave many key players a chance to rest.
South Korea is no stranger to the Vietnamese women's volleyball team. At the 2023 Asian Championship in early September, coach Nguyen Tuan Kiet's team caused a stir when they came from behind to defeat South Korea 3-2, then reached the semi-finals of the tournament.
Meeting again after about a month, the two teams entered the match with an attractive attacking style. The Vietnamese women's volleyball team played very confidently, leading their opponents by 3 points, but then the Korean team equalized and took the lead.
After the score was 15-15, Korea had effective attacks, while the defense of the Vietnamese women's volleyball team was confused, accepting a 16-25 loss.
Entering set 2, the Vietnamese women's team still entered the match with great confidence, at one point leading their opponents by 3 points. After the two teams tied 12-12, the match was very exciting.
Unfortunately, at the decisive moment, the Korean women's volleyball team took advantage of the poor organization of the Vietnamese defense, thereby winning 25-22.
In set 3, the Vietnamese girls played with 200% of their strength to shorten the score so they could create a spectacular comeback like in Thailand in early September.
Thanh Thuy was still the main hitter, scoring many important points to help the Vietnamese women's volleyball team take the lead 14-12. The score was 19-19, and from this point on the Vietnamese girls played with a brave spirit.
Bich Thuy's diagonal moves behind her back surprised her opponent and the 1m84 tall hitter had a drop shot that helped the Vietnamese women's volleyball team win 25-22 in this set.
In set 4, with the psychological advantage, the Vietnamese women's volleyball team played very effectively. After the score was 15-15, Thanh Thuy and her teammates took the lead 18-15, before defeating their opponents 25-22, bringing the match into the decisive 5th set.
Entering the final set, the Vietnamese women's volleyball team had a 2-point advantage, but the gap was closed when Korea equalized 11-11. However, at the most important moment of the match, the Vietnamese girls scored 4 consecutive points to end the set with a 15-11 victory, winning 3-2 overall.
This is the second time in a row in just about a month that Thanh Thuy and her teammates have defeated Korea in a comeback scenario. The victory not only helped the Vietnamese women's volleyball team rank first in Group C, but also opened the door to the semi-finals to compete for a medal at the 19th ASIAD.
