Immediately after being restructured with a new chairman and 10 new members, the Korea Football Association (KFA) National Team Strengthening Committee immediately got to work. Committee chairman Chung Hae Seong (former head coach of Ho Chi Minh City FC) and a group of experts - including former Vietnam national team assistant Lee Young Jin - immediately came up with 8 criteria to select a new head coach for the Korean national team.
These criteria are related to tactics, development strategy, achievements, career, communication skills, leadership qualities, assistant team and feasibility. Mr. Chung Hae Seong announced and explained all 8 criteria above in his first interview as the chairman of the most important professional council in the Korea Football Association.
The first factor to consider is ability. "That person must be able to build and apply a suitable playing strategy for the team," said Chung Hae Seong. According to SPOTV News, this is an aspect that coach Jurgen Klinsmann - who was fired last week - failed to meet. The German coach was assessed as lacking ideas and poor at adapting to situations on the field.
The criteria for selecting a head coach that KFA has put forth are also said to have learned from Mr. Klinsmann's own failure.
In addition to tactical ability, the Korean Football Association also wants the national team head coach to have a development strategy towards the future. They need the head coach to have a balanced force plan, with continuity between generations and not too much difference between the main factors and the replacements. This is something Mr. Klinsmann has not been able to do.
The third criterion that the KFA requires of the national team head coach is to prove his ability through his career successes. The Korean media also immediately compared him to Coach Klinsmann. He was an excellent player but has not had any significant achievements in his coaching career.
In addition, coach Jurgen Klinsmann also failed to meet other criteria such as communication skills and leadership qualities. The German coach often works remotely and has no connection with professional departments, and does not even know what the Korean National Team Strengthening Committee is.
