According to statistics from the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Thanh Hoa province, the locality currently has 648,370 hectares of forest with hundreds of precious medicinal species.

In order to preserve and develop the genetic resources of indigenous medicinal plants, in recent years, the provincial Department of Agriculture has implemented many scientific programs and projects to preserve and develop indigenous medicinal plants under the canopy of natural forests and planted forests.

Many models have been successfully implemented, opening up directions for livelihood development for mountainous people to reduce poverty.

Black wormwood is a precious medicinal plant distributed widely in Pu Luong Nature Reserve. The plant is nearly 70 cm tall, the leaves are slightly purple green, is a precious medicinal plant, the rhizome of the plant has the effect of enhancing health, treating bone and joint diseases, treating abdominal pain, stomach and duodenal ulcers, anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant, reducing obesity, has anti-cancer and anti-tumor activity.

Faced with the serious decline of this medicinal plant, the Pu Luong Nature Reserve Management Board has implemented the Black Mugwort Conservation and Development Project for the period 2019-2022.

Up to now, the unit has produced the plant variety and widely propagated it, with an area of 0.5 ha, in the community forest area of Pa Ban village, Thanh Son commune, Ba Thuoc mountainous district, thereby successfully preserving and developing the black wormwood tree - this precious medicinal species.

In addition to the Black Mugwort plant, the Pu Luong Nature Reserve Management Board has successfully implemented projects on the production of precious medicinal plants such as: Seven leaves one flower, Gynostemma pentaphyllum, red polygonum multiflorum, Codonopsis pilosula...

This is a precious natural medicinal resource that is being developed, propagated, and successfully tested at the nursery of the Pu Luong Nature Reserve Management Board.

Mr. Le Thanh Huu, Deputy Director of Pu Luong Nature Reserve, said that Black Artemisia is a valuable medicinal plant with high economic efficiency. It prefers mountainous climates and is a medicinal plant that can help people in the highlands escape poverty.

The unit has coordinated with local authorities to widely propagate the shift in crop structure, creating a source of seeds for people; committed to supporting 50% of medicinal seeds for people to grow this plant by 2025.

In the mountainous districts of Quan Hoa and Lang Chanh, the experimental planting process in forest areas showed that endemic indigenous medicinal plants grow well, with productivity and quality equivalent to natural growth.

Many medicinal plant models under the forest canopy have been initially successful, bringing economic efficiency such as: Model of planting 3 medicinal plant species under the forest canopy in Nam Dong Species Conservation Area; model of planting blood vine and ivy in Quan Hoa; model of Ngoc Linh ginseng and Kim Tuyen orchid of Song Ma Joint Stock Company in Nang Cat village, Tri Nang commune, Lang Chanh district; model of purple khôi tree in Ben En National Park...

The success of these models is an important basis for Thanh Hoa province to call for programs, projects, and businesses to grow and process these medicinal herbs on a large scale.

Mr. Le Thanh Cong, technical officer of Lang Chanh Protective Forest Management Board, said that the unit is implementing a model of growing golden orchid, a precious medicinal herb that brings high economic efficiency.

Before planting, the unit studied soil and climate samples and found them suitable, so they planted several trial crops.

Up to now, the trees have grown well, with a survival rate of 70-80%; after success, they will be propagated locally and the techniques and varieties will be transferred to the people in the mountainous areas to develop the economy and reduce poverty.

Of which, there are 529 types of precious indigenous medicinal plants, with 42 species listed as rare and endangered, in need of urgent conservation and development such as: orchid, Morinda officinalis, Phyllanthus urinaria, Chinese yam, seven leaves one flower...

Over the years, through scientific research programs and projects, nature reserves and national parks in the province have built 16 indigenous medicinal plant models under the canopy of natural forests and planted forests.

Thanks to that, many medicinal herbs have been successfully propagated and widely distributed in the area, helping growers increase their income.

Mr. Le Duc Thuan, Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Thanh Hoa province, affirmed that recently, the Department has directed units that are growing medicinal plants under the forest canopy to preserve the original state of the plant varieties; for forest areas with natural distribution, the plant varieties must be preserved in their original state. At the same time, the Department requires units to build nurseries to propagate and supply to growers.

In the coming time, the agricultural sector of Thanh Hoa province will continue to research and replicate successful models of growing medicinal herbs under forest canopy, creating livelihoods for people; have many solutions to attract and call for businesses to invest in the chain, contributing to preserving and improving the quality and value of naturally grown medicinal herbs.
