Expectations of breakthrough from winter crop production

Việt NamViệt Nam28/10/2024

In recent years, winter crop production has been identified by localities in the province as a major crop of the year, bringing high economic value to farmers. However, in the 2024-2025 winter crop, due to the impact of the weather, warm-loving winter crops were damaged and the best planting season has basically expired. Therefore, along with caring for and protecting the cultivated crop area, the agricultural sector has been directing localities to proactively diversify crops, especially high-value crops, with production linkages to create new breakthroughs in productivity, quality and value from the last crop of the year.

Expectations of breakthrough from winter crop production The winter crop is expected to bring high economic efficiency to the people of Quang Loc commune (Hau Loc).

As one of the localities with a tradition of agricultural production, in the 2024-2025 winter crop, Tho Xuan district has set a plan to plant 5,200 hectares of crops. Of which, the area of commercial corn is 1,700 hectares, sweet potatoes are 160 hectares, plants such as chili, sweet corn, potatoes, melons, squash are 450 hectares... the rest are vegetables and other crops. Right from the end of the crop season, the district has directed communes and towns to proactively review the land fund with production capacity and the actual situation of labor, market... to develop a plan on the area and structure of key crops. The district's agricultural sector also identified corn, soybeans, potatoes, sweet potatoes, and various vegetables and beans as key crops in the winter crop. However, according to Mr. Nguyen Van Nhan, Director of Xuan Tan Agricultural Service Cooperative, Truong Xuan Commune, due to the impact of storms No. 3 and No. 4 causing floods, the production season of some short-term crops has ended, so the winter crop production area has decreased, and the economic value is at risk of not reaching the same level as previous years. Therefore, in order to create a breakthrough in economic value, the People's Committee of Truong Xuan Commune has directed agricultural cooperatives to select crops with high economic value, large consumption markets, and partners to cooperate in production and purchase products for production.

Based on the above orientation, Truong Xuan commune has guided and encouraged people to grow 500 hectares of short-term vegetables, such as: cabbage, cauliflower, kohlrabi, tomatoes, bitter melon, herbs, cucumbers... to supply the market at the end of the year. Of which, hundreds of hectares of crops have found partners to consume their products.

Affected by floods in the first crop season, Ha Trung district has developed a new production plan to ensure productivity, output and economic value for the winter crop. Building a production plan of 1,050 hectares of crops, Ha Trung district has included in the plan the development of about 460 hectares of crops linked to production, mainly corn, potatoes and sweet potatoes. To achieve this goal, especially with the crop area with consumption contracts, the district has directed communes, towns and agricultural service cooperatives to connect with enterprises that have a tradition of purchasing and cooperating in previous crops and connect with new units to ensure stable output for products. Along with that, the district assigned the task to the district Agricultural Service Center to organize seminars and training sessions to raise awareness and production skills for farmers. At the same time, support and provide quality crop varieties, instruct farmers in modern farming techniques, and apply high technology to production; Strengthen promotional activities and build brands for winter agricultural products of the district, helping products increase their connectivity and easily access both domestic and foreign markets.

According to a preliminary survey by the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Ha Trung district, currently, the district has about 400 hectares of crops linked to production, including potatoes, sweet potatoes, green onions, cucumbers and sweet corn. Along with that, the district has been and is continuing to encourage farmers to expand the area of crops for processing and with good consumption potential in the domestic market.

Expectations of breakthrough from winter crop production Farmers in Truong Xuan commune (Tho Xuan) take care of winter crops.

In the 2024-2025 winter crop, Thanh Hoa province aims to develop 47,000 hectares of crops, with an economic value of about 3,498 billion VND or more (current price), an average of 76 million VND/ha of planting or more. However, due to the impact of storms No. 3 and No. 4 causing rain and floods, the best planting time for winter crops such as corn, soybeans, chili peppers, etc. has basically expired. Therefore, although there is still a lot of land for winter crops, the province does not encourage expanding the area by any means, but only focuses on products with suitable markets and land. In particular, developing short-term vegetable crops to meet the needs of the province and the northern provinces, especially during the Lunar New Year 2025, is one of the appropriate solutions to ensure economic efficiency and have the opportunity to make a breakthrough in the value of production for the whole crop. Along with that, during the inspection of the winter crop production situation at the end of September, the leaders of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development recommended that people need to develop production associated with the issuance of growing area codes, products that meet food safety quality, and focus on developing production in the direction of linking product consumption between businesses and people to ensure stable output.

In addition, localities, especially agricultural service cooperatives, need to strengthen trade promotion to boost the consumption of winter crop products, focusing on key products such as potatoes (fresh, processed), tomatoes, squash, sweet corn, corn for fresh green feed for livestock, melons of all kinds, short-term vegetables with high commodity value... Focus on quickly harvesting the winter crop area that is ready to be harvested to provide products to meet food needs during the Lunar New Year, taking advantage of the high vegetable prices, contributing to improving economic efficiency from winter crop production.
