On the evening of January 18, in a cozy atmosphere before the New Year, Ho Chi Minh City organized a meeting for overseas Vietnamese to celebrate the Lunar New Year 2025. Attending the meeting were Ms. Nguyen Thi Le - Deputy Secretary of the City Party Committee, Chairwoman of the People's Council; Mr. Duong Ngoc Hai - Permanent Vice Chairman of the People's Committee. Notably, the meeting was attended by hundreds of overseas Vietnamese delegates from many countries and territories around the world.
Great contribution to the city
Speaking at the ceremony, Ms. Nguyen Thi Le - Deputy Secretary of the City Party Committee, Chairwoman of the Ho Chi Minh City People's Council said that looking back at 2024, the domestic economic situation still had many difficulties and challenges that had multifaceted impacts on Ho Chi Minh City. However, with the high determination of the entire political system and the joint efforts of all classes of people, including the significant contributions of overseas Vietnamese, the city has achieved many positive results.
The city's economy continues to recover positively, shifting towards modernization, with a fairly good growth rate. Gross Regional Domestic Product (GRDP) in 2024 will increase by 7.17% compared to 2023.
According to the Deputy Secretary of the City Party Committee and Chairman of the Ho Chi Minh City People's Council, the overseas Vietnamese community has accompanied the city, making great contributions to promoting, introducing, and communicating to international friends the policies of the Party and the laws of the State in general, and of Ho Chi Minh City in particular. Overseas Vietnamese businessmen have proposed solutions to strengthen the mobilization and connection of the overseas Vietnamese community to consume the city's branded products.
Statistics show that in 2024, remittances to Vietnam will be about 16 billion USD, of which Ho Chi Minh City alone will reach 9.6 billion USD, an increase of about 140 million USD compared to 2023. Remittances to Ho Chi Minh City have always grown over the years and accounted for about 55% of total remittances in Vietnam in the last 3 years. "This is a valuable resource to help promote the city's economic development, demonstrating the affection of overseas Vietnamese for Ho Chi Minh City," Ms. Le emphasized.
Ms. Nguyen Thi Le informed that the city will focus on leadership and direction, giving the highest priority to promoting growth associated with macroeconomic stability, controlling inflation, ensuring large balances and high surpluses; striving for double-digit economic growth in 2025. To realize these goals, the important contribution of nearly 3 million overseas Vietnamese with connections to Ho Chi Minh City who are living and working in over 130 countries and territories is indispensable.
On behalf of the leaders of Ho Chi Minh City, Ms. Nguyen Thi Le acknowledged and commended the collectives and individuals of Vietnamese people abroad who have made positive contributions to the development of the city over the past time... She wanted our compatriots abroad to continue to promote the spirit of patriotism and national pride, join hands with the Party Committee, Government and people of the city, make positive contributions to strive to complete the targets of the Resolution of the 11th City Party Congress, term 2020 - 2025.
Connecting flesh and blood with the origin
Speaking at the meeting, Mr. Johnathan Hanh Nguyen - a Vietnamese in the United States expressed that he was extremely honored and moved to meet Vietnamese people who always turn their hearts towards their homeland.
According to Mr. Johnathan Hanh Nguyen, after nearly 40 years of working and developing in Vietnam, he has always determined his mission to contribute to his homeland. He expressed that if approved by the authorities, he will implement strategic projects to promote socio-economic growth. Specifically: Building a high-end commercial area and a discount shopping center according to international standards, aiming to turn Ho Chi Minh City into a leading shopping and entertainment center. In addition, he will coordinate with domestic and foreign partners to build a large-scale commercial and entertainment complex, contributing to the gradual formation of an international financial center.
Meanwhile, Ms. Tran Tue Tri - Overseas Vietnamese in Singapore shared that she was recently honored to participate in breakthrough innovation events in Ho Chi Minh City and nationwide. She clearly felt the government's determination in developing independent science and technology, and actions to avoid the middle-income trap. She assessed that Ho Chi Minh City is on the right track to become a high-income locality by 2030.
Ms. Tran Tue Tri called on overseas Vietnamese around the world to join hands to build the country more and more prosperous, firmly on the path of development.
Associate Professor, Dr. Bui Quoc Bao - a Vietnamese living in France, suggested that the city's leaders should have more innovative policies in promoting resources from overseas Vietnamese. In particular, there should be specific "topics" and the establishment of expert groups to support in solving each specific problem. For example, the common problem of traffic jams and flooding in Ho Chi Minh City should be solved at the overall level, or in each area; or the problem of renovating the city's canals, which are the face, the living environment of the people, the face for tourism development of the city...
