Although there are still about 3 months left until the entrance exam for the first level (grades 10 and 6), in recent days, thousands of parents and students in Ho Chi Minh City have begun to look for information, because there are many conflicting predictions.
As the most important admission period for students in Ho Chi Minh City in many years, the 10th grade admission period for the 2025-2026 school year currently has some notable new information. According to Mr. Nguyen Van Hieu - Director of the Department of Education and Training of Ho Chi Minh City, the total enrollment target for grade 10 in the city is expected to increase by 5% compared to the previous school year, up to 70% of junior high school graduates. The increase in enrollment target is expected to significantly reduce the pressure on the 10th grade entrance exam, as many new schools and classrooms will be put into use this year. This is also what many parents and students expect. According to statistics, in the 2024-2025 school year, the total number of junior high school graduates in Ho Chi Minh City is estimated at about 90,000, a figure much lower than in previous years. Increasing the total target while reducing the number of students also significantly reduces the pressure.
However, according to some parents, although the general level of competition will decrease significantly, for high schools with brands, the pressure may increase, especially those located in central areas with good training quality. Recently, some high schools in Ho Chi Minh City forecasted to reduce enrollment quotas for grade 10 in the 2025-2026 school year, some schools will reduce by several hundred quotas.
Specifically, Thanh Da High School plans to enroll 495 students, a decrease of 315 quotas, equivalent to 7 classes (45 students per class); Phuoc Long High School enrolls 540 students, a decrease of 225 quotas; Tay Thanh High School enrolls 900 students, a decrease of 225 quotas; Tran Quang Khai High School enrolls 765 students, a decrease of 180 quotas; Tan Binh High School enrolls 675 students, a decrease of 130 quotas. On the contrary, some schools also increase their quotas, such as Vinh Loc B High School enrolls 765 students, an increase of 135 quotas; Tran Dai Nghia Secondary - High School enrolls 285 students, an increase of 80 quotas...
The reason for the decrease (or increase) in enrollment quotas for the next school year is that last school year, the number of 12th graders graduating was lower than this year. The enrollment quotas for 10th graders at high schools are usually equal to the number of 12th graders graduating that year. It can be said that although the general trend is that enrollment pressure will decrease, in high schools with reduced enrollment quotas, competition will be fiercer, requiring parents and students to consider carefully before registering their wishes.
Meanwhile, the entrance exam for grade 6 in Ho Chi Minh City this year is also expected to have a lot of pressure, especially for schools with good quality. Last school year, 6 junior high schools in the area organized entrance exams using competency assessment tests to recruit students. Meanwhile, many other junior high schools used additional criteria in addition to primary school transcripts such as foreign language certificates (English) or awards from talent competitions. The reason is that the demand for parents to submit applications far exceeds the actual quota of the school. Currently, of the 6 schools that organized entrance exams last school year, only a few schools have confirmed that they will continue to take entrance exams, while the rest still use selection. The addition of additional criteria and entrance exams has caused many parents to send their children to tutoring and extra classes at foreign language centers in the hope of being admitted because primary school transcripts alone are not enough.
It can be said that although there have been some changes, the entrance exam for grades 10 and 6 in Ho Chi Minh City is still quite competitive and fierce, making parents and students always very nervous and worried before each entrance exam.
