Wolf Ranch, an ambitious project of 100 3D-printed homes in Austin, Texas, will be a major step forward for 3D printing technology in the US. The project's first model home has just been unveiled, ready for the first group of residents to arrive in September, New Atlas reported on July 21.

Described as the world’s largest 3D-printed housing project, Wolf Ranch is being built by Lennar and Icon in collaboration with renowned architecture firm Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG). The project is part of a larger development by Hillwood Communities Development that also includes traditionally built homes.

The 100 3D-printed homes range in size from 1,500 to 2,000 square feet, all one-story. There are eight different floor plans, offering home options with three or four bedrooms and two or three bathrooms. Their overall design is inspired by traditional Texas ranches.

The completed home, which the team has just unveiled, gives potential buyers a taste of what it would be like to live in a 3D-printed home. At first glance, the structure looks like any other modern home, but upon closer inspection, the walls have distinctive ridges that indicate it was built with a 3D printer. The home appears to be filled with light and is spacious inside, with large windows and a large living area with an attached kitchen.

Wolf Ranch homes will reduce their energy consumption from the grid thanks to solar power systems. They will also feature a number of smart home technologies, such as camera-integrated doorbells, Wi-Fi-enabled locks, and smart thermostats.

Workers are using Icon’s Vulcan 3D printer to build the Wolf Ranch. The 3D printer uses a nozzle to squirt Lavacret, a proprietary cement-like mixture, into layers that form the home’s basic structure. Workers then finish the home with a roof, doors, windows, and other components.

Currently, 6 homes in the Wolf Ranch area are completed and ready for customers to buy. Prices range from 475,990 - 559,990 USD.
