Surprisingly, it was green bean cake - a traditional Vietnamese dessert originating from Hai Duong province. The cake is made from a combination of green beans, vegetable oil or lard, sugar and flavoring to create a cake with a soft and smooth candy-like consistency. It is believed that the cake first appeared in the 1920s, and since then, the simple combination has become a local favorite and has become famous throughout the country.

Traditionally, mung bean cake is enjoyed with a cup of green tea or lotus tea.

Previously, in mid-March, TasteAtlas published a list of the 45 worst Vietnamese foods and topping the list was green bean cake. Second place was blood pudding, followed by popular dishes such as banh troi, thit jelly, bun dau mam tom, chao long, bun mam…, even banh chung, banh tet, banh gio.

TasteAtlas 's ranking of the 100 worst foods has caused a stir, especially in Thailand, where the country's favorite dish, fish curry, was ranked number one.

Thai Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin said that TasteAtlas 's ranking of kaeng tai pla, a popular southern Thai curry made from fish intestines, as the "World's Worst Rated Food" only reflects the eating preferences of some people, according to the Bangkok Post .

“Some people may make negative comments about certain Thai dishes, but many other Thai dishes are also considered among the best in the world,” he said on Thursday.

Mr Srettha explained that not everyone likes the spiciness of kaeng tai pla. However, the strong flavour is what makes the dish unique and popular, adding that it is one of his personal favourites.

Thai Fish Curry

Kaeng tai pla, characterized by its thick and spicy taste, is made from salted fish intestines, shrimp paste, seafood and various spices.

This dish was listed as the worst on the review site TasteAtlas, published on March 16, based on a survey of 301,750 people.

The results have left Thai netizens confused as the dish is loved by many locals, thus the recent trending hashtag "Save Kaeng Tai Pla" has appeared on social media in the land of golden temples.
