Ba Mun Island, also known as Cao Lo Island, has an area of about 1,800 hectares, stretching nearly 20km in the Northeast - Southwest direction. In particular, the island was formed on the rock foundation with the oldest geological composition in Bai Tu Long National Park, including conglomerate, sandstone and shale. The complex terrain and underground streams have created a unique ecosystem with many rare species of flora and fauna.

The ecosystem on the island is a large evergreen tropical forest with a multi-layered structure and rich vegetation. The high temperature and humidity help decomposition to occur strongly, increasing humus accumulation, improving soil fertility, forming a closed material cycle. This is an ideal habitat for many species of wildlife, a rich and diverse treasure trove of tropical biological resources. Notably, the ecosystem on the mountainous island of Ba Mun is completely different from the rocky islands in Ha Long Bay, providing richer biodiversity with plant species such as Bach Benh, La Khoi, and Sam Nam.

On Ba Mun Island, there are 7 large streams with unique names such as: O Lon To stream, O Lon Con stream, Mieu Danh stream, Van Lau stream, Cao Lo stream, Khe Che stream... The stream water is clean all year round, thanks to the large forest cover, becoming a valuable source of fresh water in the middle of the ocean. The density of forest regeneration reaches 2,400-2,600 trees/ha, of which about 60-70% of the regenerated trees are over 1.5m tall, the seedlings grow quickly, and have few pests and diseases.

Coming to Ba Mun is a journey to discover amazing nature. Coming here, visitors not only immerse themselves in the wild nature but also have the opportunity to explore the rich animal world. The island is home to many wild animals such as leopards, pythons, golden monkeys, pangolins and especially the only population of golden deer in the Northeast of Vietnam. In addition, seabirds and migratory birds also appear regularly, contributing to creating a vivid natural picture. In that wild space, visitors can see golden deer leisurely grazing or herds of wild pigs playing by the stream. The diverse ecosystem not only creates its own attraction but also has high scientific value in nature conservation research.

Ba Mun Island has been plagued by illegal hunting, which has reduced the number of animals. However, thanks to strict conservation measures, the populations of yellow deer and wild boar are gradually recovering. Bai Tu Long National Park staff regularly monitor and protect the habitat of the species. At the same time, a Wildlife Rescue Center has been established to care for and protect the affected individuals.
