VOV.VN - The 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly opened today in New York, USA, with the theme "Leaving No One Behind: Working Together for the Advancement of Peace, Sustainable Development and Human Dignity for Present and Future Generations".
The 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly will host a series of bilateral and ministerial meetings on issues ranging from the Atlantic ecosystem to Ukraine’s energy supplies to the escalating conflict in the Middle East. An event the United Nations calls the “Global Diplomacy Super Bowl.”
“To rebuild trust, we must start from the present and look to the future,” said UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres. “Across the world, people are hoping for a future of peace, dignity and prosperity. They are calling for global action to tackle the climate crisis, tackle inequality and address new and emerging risks that threaten everyone. And they see the United Nations as essential to addressing these challenges.”

The United Nations General Assembly has been an annual gathering of world leaders for nearly eight decades since the multilateral body was founded in San Francisco, hosting lengthy speeches, private discussions between nations and group meetings on everything from regulating artificial intelligence to global conflicts.
This year, the United Nations has once again been embroiled in debate over its role and effectiveness as it tries to contain conflicts in Gaza, Ukraine and Sudan. There are growing calls for reform of the UN to better reflect today’s world, “correct the historical injustice of Africa” in not having a permanent seat on the Security Council and increase representation of the Asia-Pacific and Latin America regions. Taking place just ahead of the UN General Assembly High-Level Week, the Future Summit has reached consensus on upgrading the UN to address its challenges.
At the event, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa emphasized: “This is an opportunity to fulfill the promise of reforming global governance structures, including international financial institutions and the United Nations Security Council. Placing the fate of world security in the hands of a select few while the majority of the world's people suffer the consequences of various threats. This is unjust, unfair and unsustainable.”
“The success of humanity lies in our collective strength, not in the battlefield. And for global peace and development, reform in global institutions is essential. Reform is the key to relevance,” Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi added.
Climate change, a series of ongoing conflicts around the world and the upcoming US presidential election will dominate speeches and meetings. A meeting on rising sea levels will also be held on the first day of the UN General Assembly High-Level Week. Leaders from vulnerable island nations are calling for more action to tackle global warming.
